To the distinguished Mr. Yaakov Yehoshua (Yaakov is a first name and Yehoshua a family name),

I greet you and bless you,

I received, in its time, the news of the shloshim* celebration that you organized for your father, the great Rav and Chassid*, Rav Chananya Gavriel, may his soul rest in peace. This is indeed proof that you esteem the deceased at his true worth.

I was pleased to learn that you are interested in the manuscripts left by your father, the Rav, all the more so since, as you specify, they are already classified and arranged. You ask me whether they are worthy of being published and which publishing house will accept to bring them out. There are, in Jerusalem, numerous Rabbanim* and Torah* teachers who are capable of examining these manuscripts and saying whether they are publishable as is or whether they need further work. If they issue a positive opinion, it is clear, for various reasons, that this book should be published locally, in the Holy Land.

I take the liberty of adding a personal point. You describe to me the nature of these manuscripts and the work that was invested in them. I therefore have good hope that you yourself and your brother, to whom you allude in your letter, will continue in this direction. I am alluding not only to the technical aspect — that is, to the publication of these writings — but also to their study, which was surely the essential goal of their author.

This study will be in accordance with the famous principle stated by our Sages: "Great is study that leads to action." They also say, in Tractate Bava Basra, that one cannot speak of death regarding Dovid, because of the son he left (Shlomo).

It is surely unnecessary to elaborate on this idea, and nothing can withstand the will — all the more so since the merit of your ancestors comes to your aid.

With my blessing that your mother, to whom Hashem* will grant long life, have better health, and that you know success in all of this, as well as your brother,

בשעתו קבלתי הידיעה על דבר יום השלשים והאזכרה שעשו לאביו הרה"ג והרה"ח וכו' וכו' הרב חנניא גבריאל ז"ל תנצב"ה, שזה הוכיח כי העריכו כראוי את המנוח ז"ל.

קראתי בסיפוק רוחני כי מתענין בכתבי-יד שנשארו מאביו הרב ז"ל, אשר כמו שכותב כבר סדורים וערוכים הם. ובהנוגע לגוף השאלה אם ראויים הם לפירסום ואיזה הוצאת ספרים תוכל להוציא הספר לאור, הרי כמה בירושלים רבנים ומורי הוראה שהי' צריך להראות להם הכתבים לדון אם הכתבים מוכנים לדפוס כמו שהם או עוד צריכים הכנה וליבון כו', ואם חוות דעתם תהי' חיובית הנה כמובן שספרים כאלה צריך להדפיס על אתר באה"ק ת"ו מכמה טעמים.

ארשה לעצמי להוסיף נימה אישית, בהתאם לאופן כתבו ע"ד הכתבי-יד והעבודה שהושקעה בהם, אשר תקותי שהוא ביחד עם אחיו שי' שכותב אדותיו ימשיכו בכיוון זה, וכוונתי לא רק בחלק הטכני בהנוגע לפירסום הכתבי-יד, אלא גם בלימוד בהם, שזהו בודאי עיקר כוונת המחבר, לימוד באופן שהורונו רז"ל במאמרם המפורסם גדול תלמוד שמביא לידי מעשה, וכמאמרם ז"ל (ב"ב קטז, א) דוד שהניח בן כמותו לא נאמרה בו מיתה, ובודאי למותר להאריך בזה הרעיון ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון, ובפרט שזכות אבותיו מסייעתם.
