I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that you now occupy the position of shochet* in your city. You are therefore particularly busy and do not have time to devote yourself to the needs of those around you, although various matters require rectification. Likewise, you do not have time to study and to serve the Creator. This, at least, is what you write in your letter.

You understand how impossible such a situation is. The Mishnah* states: "I was created to serve my Creator." It is therefore inconceivable that there be a single Jew in the world who is unable to fulfill the purpose of his creation.

Another Mishnah* says: "Do not say: 'When I have time, I will study.'" When one takes action, one may have the impression of not having time. Then, quickly, one realizes that this possibility exists and even that it develops from time to time.

Positively influencing others is also a positive commandment of the Torah*, as it is said: "Love your fellow as yourself" and "You shall rebuke your fellow." This also applies to what must, in this case, be rectified.

במענה על מכתבו מבשר אשר נסתדר במשרת שו"ב בעיר... וטרוד ביותר בזה עד שאין הזמן מספיק להתעסק בצרכי הסביבה אף שבודאי שכמה ענינים בה צריכים תיקון וכן אין פנאי ללמוד ולעבודת הבורא, כך כותב במכתבו.

ומובן עד כמה אי אפשר מצב זה, כיון שפסק המשנה היא, אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני, ואם כן הרי אי אפשר שימצא יהודי בעולם שלא יהי' לו פנאי לתפקיד בריאתו, אלא שהוא ע"ד מאמר משנה אחרת, ואל תאמר לכשאפנה אשנה וכו', וכשמתחילין בפעולות, אף שנדמה שאין פנאי, מתברר במשך זמן קצר שישנה היכולת והאפשריות ומזמן לזמן מתגדלים הם, וכיון שהפעולה על הזולת היא ג"כ מצות עשה מן התורה וכמ"ש ואהבת לרעך כמוך, הוכח תוכיח את עמיתך, הרי כל האמור הוא גם בהנוגע לתקן עניני...
