To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*,
Rav Shaul Dovid (Rav S. D. Margolis of Brooklyn) HaKohen,
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of the 3rd of the month during which one increases one's joy (Adar). You discuss the study of Torah* by young girls, in response to my mention (see letter no. 4028) of our custom, based on Tractate Berachos 17a, of wishing, also for a girl (on the occasion of her birth): "to Torah*, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds," according to the formulation of the Rebbe Rashab*.
You know how precise are the words of the Sages in general, and those of the leaders of Israel who give instructions to all, in particular. In this case, one may ask why the Rebbe Rashab* illustrates his statement by citing Tractate Berachos and not other Talmudic passages, particularly those that have a bearing on Halachah* and deal with the merit of studying Torah*.
A preliminary concept will be introduced. According to all opinions, women must know what is permitted and what is forbidden — that is, the laws of all the prohibitions and all the positive commandments in which men and women are equal. Please consult the Tur Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim, Chapter 47, regarding the obligation of women to know the Torah*. See also the commentaries on that text. Additionally, refer to the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, end of the first chapter, according to which women are required to learn the laws they must know.
Nevertheless, such study does not proceed from the mitzvah* of learning Torah*, but simply from a preparation to put the mitzvah* into practice. Various Talmudic passages establish this, particularly those you cite in your letter regarding the study of girls. But this does not yet demonstrate that one should say, for a girl: "to Torah*, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds" — for such conduct is part of good deeds. And of course, one cannot formulate a wish solely about Torah*.
This is why the Tractate cited was Berachos, which says: "What is the merit of women? Enabling Torah study (for their children)… enabling learning (for their husbands)… and waiting (for their return from the house of study)." For here there is indeed a participation, a merit linked to the mitzvah* itself of Torah* study. In this way, one can say even for a girl: "to Torah*, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds."
This will help us understand the formulation of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, at this reference and in his Siddur*: "A woman is not obligated to study the Torah*. Nevertheless, if she assists her son and her husband, she shares the reward with them. It is not the same if she studies the Torah* herself, since she has no obligation to do so. For all that, women must also study the laws that concern them." Please consult this text.
This provides an answer to the question you pose. How indeed can a woman perform shechitah*? She must, for this, learn its laws, which is permitted and even obligatory for women in this case, as we have just seen.
You ask me about the text of the blessing* (for the healing of a sick woman), according to our custom, which says "in all her limbs" (see letter no. 3721). You recall that the numerical value of HaMearerin, "those who curse," is two times 248 (twice the number of limbs of the male body) — for her and for him. But it is explained that limbs that cannot contract impurity are not included in this count. You also cite the responsa HaElef Lecha Shlomo, according to which one mentions "248" because the woman is blessed only in what the man also possesses.
The formulation according to our custom is thus well explained and clear. When it concerns the curse, HaMearerin, one must indeed reduce it to the fullest extent possible. The reverse is true for the blessing, which must be detailed and multiplied in every conceivable manner. You cite these responsa according to which the woman is blessed only in what the man also possesses. But one may question this, for it is known that she possesses additional limbs compared to him. She therefore needs an additional blessing.
In this regard, someone asked me why one says "in all her limbs" and not "in her 252 limbs." The answer is very simple. Tractate Bechoros 45a states several opinions regarding the number of limbs in a woman's body. The formulation "in all her limbs" is therefore acceptable according to all these opinions at once.
With my respects and my double blessing on the occasion of the birth of your daughter — may she be raised to Torah*, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds,
