I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, which was undated, in which you mention eagerness and strength of character, which you do not seem to possess in the proper manner.

Regarding eagerness, you should study the Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah* of the Alter Rebbe*, which is the second part of the holy Tanya*. Then you will meditate on what is said at the beginning of the Tur* Orach Chaim, also cited by the Ramah*: "A person who is alone at home — his gestures, his occupations — are in no way comparable to what they are in the presence of a great king."

And if this is so outside of Eretz Yisrael*, how much more is it the case in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*. Indeed, one does not stand before a great King in the same manner depending on whether He is in the field or in His palace.

After having meditated on all of this at length the first time, you will be able to briefly revive the memory of this reflection each time you need to awaken eagerness, as the Alter Rebbe* says at the beginning of his Siddur*. Thus, you will remember Hashem*, Who stands before you, and you will abandon your lethargy in favor of liveliness.

Regarding strength of character, you should study the Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Vayikra, page 1c, which says that "the emissary of the Supernal Man identifies with Him." You will reflect on this and honor the mitzvos*, which are "My emissaries." If you meditate on what has been said, you will also strengthen yourself in the way of the Torah* and in the way of the mitzvos*.

As for the program of study of Chassidus*, you will provide all the details to the elder Chassidim* near you. Based on that, they will guide you and you will follow their advice. You will know success.

No doubt you observe the three studies that concern everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, dealing with the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, which are well known. You will observe them, at least from now on.

I am responding to your letter, in which you consider the possibilities of settling in the United States as a Yeshivah* teacher or Talmud Torah* teacher, or as a shochet* for poultry, or as a cantor.

In general, those who settle here eventually find a position. Nevertheless, one cannot know how long this will take or whether this position will be satisfactory. Now, when one has a family, one must settle relatively quickly and one cannot therefore choose to wait too long.

Here, as in every other place, connections are important. All the available positions that are offered receive numerous applications. If there are people here who know you personally, it would be good to approach them and ask their assessment regarding you, based on your capabilities — which position suits you and where it will be easier to settle.

After all that has been said, I must add that you currently find yourself in a place where individuals capable of strengthening Judaism and spreading it are very few. Conversely, with the proper eagerness, it is surely possible to organize a group of young people and children who will receive a good education and perhaps even go beyond that.

One must therefore truly ask whether you should flee the place of action, especially since, where you are, your sustenance — material and spiritual — is, for the time being, assured.

במענה על מכתבו, בו כותב אודות אפשריות להסתדר בארצות הברית בתור מורה בישיבה ותלמוד תורה או בתור שוחט עופות וש"ץ וכיוצא בזה.

והנה אף כי בכלל הבאים לכאן סוף סוף מסתדרים, מובן שאי אפשר לדעת כמה יארך הזמן עד שיסתדר, ואם אופן ההסתדרות תהי' משביע רצון, ובפרט לבן משפחה שמוכרח להסתדר להקדם לפי ערך, ובמילא אינו יכול לבחור ולחכות זמן יתר, וכאן כמו בכל מקום, נוגע ג"כ היכרות, כיון שבכלל רבו המועמדים על משרות הנמצאות ומוכנות, ואם יש לו בכאן מכירים אותו פנים אל פנים, כדאי שיפנה אליהם וישאלם השערתם על יסוד היכירותם אותו וכשרונותיו, באיזה מקצוע ובאיזה מקום יסתדר בקל יותר.

לאחרי כל האמור לעיל, הנה כיון שנמצא הוא במקום שמעטים ביותר אלו היכולים לפעול בהנוגע להחזקת היהדות והפצתה, ומאידך גיסא, במרץ המתאים בודאי יש לארגן קבוצה של נוער וילדים שיתחנכו בחינוך כשר (ואפשר עוד יותר מזה), הרי צריך עיון גדול, אם צריך לברוח מן המערכה, ובפרט שפרנסתו הגשמית והרוחנית לעת עתה מסודרים הם במקומו עתה.

בקשר עם זה מענין אותי לדעת מצב היהדות במאנילא ות"ח על ידיעות מפורטות בזה.
