I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Shevat, in which you tell me of your doubts regarding your manner of dressing. Indeed, you do not know whether you should wear a long coat and a hat, your family being opposed to it.

For the time being, you yourself are in doubt on this subject. You should therefore not rush to make a decision in this matter. First, you will study the Torah* in general with ardor and passion, and Chassidus* in particular, which strengthens the fear and love of Hashem*. Then, after a certain time, you will pose this question to yourself again, according to what your situation will be then.

For the decision to change one's manner of dressing must be taken with determination, in order to eliminate any possibility of reverting to your previous manner of dressing due to shame or mockery. One can verify in practice that this is one of the greatest tests. The four sections of the Tur* and Shulchan Aruch* indicate this, beginning with: "One should not be ashamed before the mockers." במענה על מכתבו מכ"ד שבט, בו כותב שעומד בספק אם לשנות הלבושים שלו ללבוש ארוך ומגבעת שחורה ובפרט אשר בני משפחתו מנגדים לזה.

והנה כיון שלע"ע מסופק בעצמו בזה, הרי אין למהר להחלטה חיובית בהענין, ובהווה להוסיף בלימוד בהתמדה ושקידה בכלל וביחוד בלימוד תורת החסידות המחזקת יראת שמים ואהבת ד', וכעבור איזה זמן עוד הפעם ידין על השאלה האמורה לעיל בהתאם למצבו אז, כי שינוי הלבושים בכגון דא צריכה להעשות במצב רוח שההחלטה בזה מוצקת, בכדי לשלול האפשריות דחזרה ללבושים הקודמים מפני הבושה מהמלעיגים, והרי רואים במוחש שזהו מהנסיונות הגדולים וכמרומז גם בסדר כל ארבעת חלקי הטושו"ע שהתחלתם הוא, ואל יבוש מפני המלעיגים. עיי"ש.
