To Mr. Eliezer Steinman,
I greet you and bless you,
I would like, by this letter, to thank you for having taken the trouble to send me the books you have recently published — namely, the writings of the Maggid of Dubno, those of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, and the first two volumes of Be'er HaChassidus.
Regarding these books, and in particular the Be'er HaChassidus series, I would like to make two remarks:
A) The author of a book in general, and one dealing with a profound subject in particular, has the goal of arousing interest in the heart of the reader, so that he will continue to be interested in the ideas treated in that work and to deepen them. This is especially the case when the author merely presents, in his own formulation, concepts treated elsewhere.
In every era, and particularly in ours, one endeavors to simplify the task of the reader and the student by making "a handle with which to grasp the cup" (an index of subjects treated). In my view, and as experience establishes, it is therefore particularly important to specify, at the bottom of the page or at the end of the book, the references for each chapter, with the indication of pages.
When one provides a citation, one gives the reader the means to express his own opinion on the text and sharpens his desire to deepen the subject. Moreover, this practice is beneficial not only for the reader and the student, but also for the author, who does not always retain the list of references, or even if he does, does not necessarily have it available at the moment he analyzes the text once more.
I observe that these references are lacking in your books, and if you accept my proposal, you will complete all of this in your future publications. Better still, you will publish supplements to the books already published, in which you will cite these references (see letter no. 3657).
B) You present concepts and ideas of the Torah*, which is a living Torah*, a Torah* of life. Moreover, you discuss its part that arouses emotion, and you address readers for whom these ideas are new, foreign to their value system. In order that these books be more complete and profound, it is not enough for the author compiling this collection to read these works of the Torah*, study them with all necessary attention, and convey their content.
This author must furthermore, to the fullest extent possible, "enter into" the spirit of the Torah* and of those who conceived its ideas. How much more is such an attitude necessary if the author intends to draw concrete conclusions applicable to daily life.
I do not know you personally, but I hope you will not hold it against me if I take the liberty of pointing out that, in order to achieve the objective assigned to these books — as you yourself define it in the introduction to Be'er HaChassidus — you must adopt, in a profound way, the corresponding way of life, that is to say, concretely base your existence on the Torah*, in the manner indicated in your reference books, those of Chassidus*.
It is said that "Hashem* desires the heart," but that is not sufficient. It is clearly an absolute obligation, but one cannot in any way stop there.
Perhaps you will suspect me of wanting to convince a Jew to fully practice the Torah* and the mitzvos*, in accordance with the demands of Chassidus*.
And I concede that our Sages were right in saying that "when one suspects someone, it cannot be entirely unfounded."
But in any case, what is — at least somewhat — my intention does not diminish the value of this approach for achieving the objective you have set for yourself. In my view, it is even an absolute obligation, so that the words of Chassidus* you transmit be close to their source and to their profound dimension.
You will perhaps be astonished by my hope of influencing, solely by means of a letter, a cultured man who has surely made choices in his life and adheres to them fully. Yet this influence should be such that, upon receiving this letter, you modify not only your conceptions but also your conduct.
The explanation is as follows: I am not introducing a new idea here, of my own initiative. I am merely recalling a very ancient concept which, for all that, remains new each day and constantly creates the worlds. This concept is that of our Torah* and its mitzvos*.
In the words of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya*, the soul of a Jew is a "veritable part of the Divine Above," which is therefore infinite. One who has faith in man and in the infinite powers of his soul also believes that in a single instant he can reach the highest elevation, whatever his previous situation may have been. Now, a modest element, a small spark can be the origin of all this, since this element has only to open the infinite channel present in the soul of the listener or the reader.
With my respects and my blessing,
To return to the first point of my letter: you surely possess the indices of Chabad* books that I have compiled on various occasions. I think they are very useful, for the reason stated above, not only for others but also for my personal use.
