Igrot Kodesh · Letter 413 — Yom Kippur Liturgy and Tanya on Jewish Nature — Chesed vs Gevurah

Volume 3 · Letter 8

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Cheshvan 5709,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav I. M. M. Lis[1],

I greet and bless you,

I reply to your questions.

A) It is not our custom to recite, on Yom Kippur*, the paragraphs Elokeinu VeElokei Avoteinu* and Ribono Shel Olam* that precede and follow the reading of the Akeidat Yitzchak*[2].

B) One does not recite Tachanun* and Al Chet*[3] in the Shema Yisrael* at bedtime on Yom Kippur*, even if it does not fall on Shabbat*. My father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, says regarding this: 'On Yom Kippur* one recites exactly the right number of Al Chet*.'

C) For what reason does the first chapter of Tanya*, citing the qualities possessed naturally by all Jews, state that they are merciful and perform good deeds, without mentioning that they are humble[4]?

The following may be said on this point. The first chapter of Tanya* describes the nature of Jews as it flows from the animal soul*, whereas chapter 12 of Iggeret HaKodesh* defines the nature of the divine soul*. Both texts state that they are merciful and perform good deeds, while their humility is not mentioned.

Indeed, mercy and good deeds stem from the domain of Chesed* and what tends toward it. Humility, by contrast, derives from Gevurah*, which brings about contraction, as explained in the Or HaTorah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*.

Iggeret HaKodesh* thus shows that in the Jewish soul the domain of goodness is dominant. That is why Jews are merciful and perform good deeds. Conversely, pride and humility have no place here, both deriving from Gevurah*.

Tractate Yevamot 79a states that the children of Israel, by the very nature of their animal soul*, perform good deeds, are merciful, and are humble — but this last quality is distinct from the first two, which Jews have always possessed. By contrast, tractate Beitzah 25b states that they are the proudest of all nations. Nevertheless, at the revelation of Sinai*, the Torah* removed all their force and they became humble. Thereafter, according to tractate Nedarim 20, the fathers were able to transmit this character to their children without any effort on the children's part.

You will consult, on this point, the explanation of the Maharsha* on tractate Yevamot. That is therefore why the first chapter of Tanya*, mentioning the natural qualities of Israel that flow from the animal soul*, does not speak of their humility.

You have surely established, in your city, a public study of Tanya* in a well-frequented place. Moreover, you are no doubt studying the talks and chassidic discourses of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, as it is said: 'the eighth shall be for you a holy convocation'[5].

With greetings to your entire community,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

Notes

[1] Rav Yitzchak Menachem Mendel Lis.

[2] Recited at the beginning of the morning prayer. These two paragraphs are recited only when Tachanun* is said.

[3] Some have the custom of reciting it every day.

[4] See letter 326 on this point.

[5] The verse refers to Shemini Atzeret*, the eighth day of Sukkot*. The Rebbe cites it to allude to the Previous Rebbe as the eighth master of Chassidut* since the Baal Shem Tov*.
