I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 14 Shevat, which you begin by telling me that your face is covered with shame (due to improper conduct on the part of the recipient).

It is quite obvious that the purpose of all this (this awareness) is a profound change in concrete action. You tell me that there are certain things from which you cannot restrain yourself. Yet the Creator asks this of every Jew, and it is therefore certain that He grants, in advance, all the forces necessary to achieve it. This is indeed the case for you.

Nevertheless, as in all other domains, one cannot demand a radical change, from one extreme to the other, in a single instant, for a person progresses step by step, with the appropriate effort. It is in this way that the promise of our Sages is fulfilled: "One who makes efforts will know success."

It would be good to have your tefillin* and the mezuzos* of the place where you reside checked. You should observe the ritual immersion* instituted by Ezra (after every conjugal relation), and each weekday, before prayer, you should give a few coins to tzedakah*. You should learn by heart Torah* texts that will be engraved in your mind, particularly chapters of the Mishnah* and at least one chapter of the Tanya*. And you should endeavor to have a study partner, at least for public study — that of the Yeshivah* and the beis midrash*.

May Hashem* grant that you give me good news and inform me of the improvement of the situation you describe.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ד שבט, והתחלתו אשר בושת פניו כסתו וכו'.

הנה מובן ופשוט שהתכלית בזה צריכה להיות שינוי עיקרי בהנוגע לפועל , ובמה שכותב שישנם ענינים שאינו יכול להנצל מהם כו' הרי כיון שהבורא דורש זאת מאת כל אחד ואחד מבני ישראל, בודאי שעוד מקודם לזה ניתן לו הכחות הנדרשים למלאות הדרישה, והוא הדין בנדון דידי', אלא שכמו בכל הענינים אין לדרוש שתהי' השתנות מן הקצה אל הקצה בשעתא חדא וברגעא חדא, כי עבודת האדם היא מדרגא לדרגא וביגיעה מתאימה, ואזי מתקיימת הבטחת רז"ל, יגעת ומצאת.

מהנכון הי' לבדוק את התפילין שלו וכן את המזוזות במקום שם דר, ושיהי' זהיר בטבילת עזרא, ובכל יום חול לפני תפלת הבקר יפריש איזה פרוטות לצדקה, וילמוד בע"פ ויהיו חקוקים בזכרונו דברי תורה בכלל וביחוד איזה פרקים משניות ולכל הפחות פרק אחד תניא, וישתדל ללמוד בחברותא ועכ"פ במקום לימוד תורה ברבים וכמו ישיבה ובית המדרש, והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב מהטבה בכל הענינים אודותם כותב.
