To the members of the association "Benevolence of those
who keep the Shabbos*," may Hashem* grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
You have informed me that the annual meeting of your association will take place this Sunday, and I send you my response.
May Hashem* grant that your meeting be fruitful, materially and spiritually, that it enable the performance of "benevolence" in the most literal sense. These are intrinsically important and, furthermore, they will give rise to spiritual benevolence (the possibility of drawing closer to Hashem*).
The deeds of the Patriarchs are a sign for the children. Avraham, in particular, devoted himself to these acts of benevolence. He gave to others (in this case, food), but his goal was to proclaim: "Bless the Eternal Hashem*, Who possesses what you have eaten."
So too shall it be with the activities of your association.
Moreover, not only those who receive the benevolence, but also those who see and hear that people keep the Shabbos* and perform acts of benevolence will understand the connection between the two (it is precisely one who keeps Shabbos* who bestows benevolence) and will be affected by it.
In fact, a specific connection does indeed exist. For the observance of Shabbos* bears witness and establishes, in the words of the Chinuch* in our Parshah*, that "the world is created — which is the very foundation of faith — by His infinite Will," meaning by His gratuitous goodness (the Rebbe notes: "See Iggeres HaKodesh*, Chapter 17").
Man is created in the image of Hashem*. He receives the injunction to resemble Him, to cling to His ways, to do good. Moreover, faith, being at the right hand of Hashem*, has been given to him, as explained in the Tanya* at the end of Chapter 4, in Torah Or* at page 95b, which concludes: "This means that from the right side also emanates the fire of faith," and in Torah Or* at the beginning of page 32b.
It is said of the Supernal Man that "His throne was established in kindness." It is for this reason that the benevolent acts of man below are particularly important and enable him to receive blessing, for himself and for all the members of his family, in all their needs, material and spiritual.
With my blessing of success,
M. Schneerson,
P.S.: As is my custom, but without making it a vow, I am enclosing a check, which is my contribution to the fund of the "Benevolence of those who keep the Shabbos*."
