To the young Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and carries out a sacred mission,

Rav Chaim (Rav C. Ciment of Boston, see letter no. 2269),

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 7 Shevat, with what it contained. You have no doubt utilized the day of the Hilloula* (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*, 10 Shevat) in the appropriate manner, both for yourself and in the influence you exert on those around you.

Indeed, such was the profound will of the one whose Hilloula* we celebrate. He put into practice the statement of the Mishnah*: "Love the creatures and draw them close to the Torah*." These words apply even to those who are nothing more than creatures of Hashem* (having no other quality), as stated in Chapter 32 of the Tanya*.

Furthermore, one must draw them close to the Torah* and not draw the Torah* close to them by adapting it, as was explained during the Chassidic* gathering (farbrengen*) on the day of the Hilloula*.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מד' שבט עם המוסגר בו, ובטח ניצלו את יום ההילולא באופן המתאים בהנוגע לעצמו ובהנוגע להשפעה בכל הסביבה, שהרי זהו הי' רצונו הפנימי של בעל ההילולא כלשון המשנה, אוהב את הבריות ומקרבן לתורה, אפילו שנקראים בשם בריות בעלמא (תניא פרק ל"ב) ולקרבן לתורה, ולא לקרב ולהתאים (צופאסען) התורה אליהם, וכמדובר בהתועדות דיום ההילולא...
