Igrot Kodesh · Letter 412 — Mourning Practices — Chabad Custom After a Parent's Passing

Volume 3 · Letter 7

By the grace of Hashem,

29 Tishri 5709,

To the great Rav, Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav A. E.[1],

I have learned of the tragic passing of your mother. May her soul have a share in eternal life, and may Hashem console you among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

As you requested, and in addition to the documents I sent you during Chol HaMoed Sukkot* which you will be kind enough to return, I wish to share with you some practices based on the teachings of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita[2].

One does not tear the Tallit Katan*[3]. Yizkor*[4], according to the text in the Siddur Torah Or*, is recited even in the first year. One does not leave the synagogue, but recites it quietly nonetheless[5].

One reads the Haftarah* during the first eleven months. One is called to the Torah* whenever possible. On Shabbat* one goes up both in the morning and at Minchah*. One does not recite El Maleh Rachamim* during the first year. One reads the Torah* oneself.

Mishnah* is studied in order. During the first thirty days, chapter 24 of tractate Mikvaot* is read after each prayer. Thereafter, one recites only the four Mishnayot* corresponding to Neshamah*, the soul.

The Kaddish* recitations are as follows: before the prayer, before Barchu*, after the Amidah*, after Uva L'Tzion*, after the Song of the Day, after Kaveh*, after Aleinu*, after Tehillim*, after the Mishnah*; then at Minchah* — before the Amidah* and after it, after Aleinu*, after the Mishnah*; and at Arvit* — before Barchu*, before and after the Amidah*, after Aleinu*, after the Mishnah*[6].

Very soon, at the true and complete redemption, those who rest in the earth will awaken and rejoice, with the coming of our righteous Mashiach*.

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

[2] These are based largely on the letter of condolence that the Previous Rebbe, his father-in-law, wrote to the Rebbe when the latter lost his father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak. The Previous Rebbe was then at a rest home in Morristown, New Jersey, and learned of the passing only after the seven days of mourning. That letter reads: 'By the grace of Hashem, 4 Elul 5704, to my dear son-in-law, the great Rav, the Chassid Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shlita. I have just learned of the tragic passing of my close relative, your father, the great Rav and Chassid, may he have a share in eternal life. I share in your grief. May Hashem console you among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. The Chassid Rav Yechiel Halperin, who was constantly in Lubavitch in 5643, the year in which my father was in mourning for my grandfather, told me that he studied several passages of Mishnah — explaining some according to the esoteric part of Torah — and a page of Gemara in the presence of ten people. He read the Torah himself, though it was difficult for him due to his frail health. He read the Haftarah on Shabbat and was also called to the Torah at Minchah. He recited seventeen Kaddish: before the prayer, before Barchu, after the Amidah, after Uva L'Tzion, after the Song of the Day, after Kaveh, after Aleinu, after Tehillim, and after the Mishnah — nine Kaddish in total at Shacharit. At Minchah he recited one before the Amidah, one after it, one after Aleinu, and one after the Mishnah — four Kaddish. At Arvit, one before Barchu, one after the Amidah, one after Aleinu, and one after the Mishnah — four Kaddish; totalling seventeen. When my father mourned my grandmother in 5672, he read the Torah himself during the first thirty days, and then until Pesach while he was abroad. He then returned to Lubavitch and stopped doing so, and later expressed regret at having ceased. May Hashem strengthen your mother's health and grant her a long and pleasant life, materially and spiritually. May He also strengthen your own health and that of your wife, materially and spiritually. Your father-in-law, who loves you beyond all measure, blesses you and wishes you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, materially and spiritually.'

[3] One does not tear it during keriah*.

[4] The prayer for the souls of the departed, recited on the seventh day of Pesach*, on Shavuot*, on Yom Kippur*, and on Shemini Atzeret*.

[5] The Sefer HaMinhagim Chabad, p. 59, states nonetheless: 'During the first year of mourning, one does not leave the synagogue when the congregation recites Yizkor*, but one does not recite it. The same applies every time Yizkor* is recited.'

[6] A total of eighteen Kaddish, whereas the Previous Rebbe counted seventeen, omitting the Kaddish before the Arvit Amidah. This may be explained as follows: in 5643, the year of the Rebbe Maharash's* passing, Kaddish after Tehillim was not recited. Consequently, the Rebbe Rashab* writes in his testament: 'I scrupulously recited sixteen Kaddish.'
