To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I learned with pleasure from the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, has fine conduct and eagerness, Rav Raphael Wilshanski (see letters no. 3869 and 4067), of the words of encouragement you delivered at the Chassidic farbrengen* on the day of the Hilloula* (10 Shevat*) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, leader of Israel.

Various texts explain the pleasure derived thereby by the one whose Hilloula* is being observed, and you should consult, on this subject, the commentary of Rashi* on Tractate Yevamos* 122a. Moreover, this refers to a leader of the Jewish people, who gave his life for Israel. His action was that of a tzaddik*, distributing vitality to all the living. Every soul was bound to his by an intense and eternal love, in the words of the Alter Rebbe* in Iggeres HaKodesh*, at the beginning of Chapter 27.

One can therefore connect profoundly with him, for from where he is, he sees and hears what is happening, as emphasized in Tractate Shabbos* 153a. How much more is this the case when one repeats his teachings, to which his soul was deeply bound, according to the explanation of the Tanya*, at the beginning of Chapter 5.

May Hashem grant that the merit of the one whose Hilloula* we observe protect each of us, within the entire Jewish people, in order to obtain Heavenly assistance to put into practice the mission assigned to us, as the Mishnah* states: "to serve my Creator."

ומבואר בכ"מ ע"ד הנחת רוח דנשמת בעל ההילולא עי"ז (יעויין רש"י, יבמות קכ"ב ריש עמוד א') ובפרט כשהמדובר הוא בנשיא ישראל, אשר שבק חיי רוחו פעולתו אשר עבד בה לפנים בישראל פעולת צדיק לחיים לכל חי נפש כל חי הקשורה בנפשו בחבלי עבותות אהבה רבה ואהבת עולם כו' (לשון רבנו הזקן באגה"ק ריש סימן כ"ז) קישור חזק דהתם קאי דמחמי לי ואחים (שבת קנ"ג ע"א) ובפרט כשמשמיעים מדברי תורתו, שנפשו היתה מיוחדת עמם ביחוד נפלא (כמבואר בתניא ריש פרק ה').

ויהי רצון שזכות בעל ההילולא יגן על כאו"א מאתנו בתוך כלל ישראל להרבות הסייעתא דשמיא במילוי התפקיד כדבר משנה, לשמש את קוני.
