Igrot Kodesh · Letter 411 — Publishing Chassidus Books as Memorial and Spiritual Legacy

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav ...

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your blessing for the new year. Whoever gives a blessing receives one in return from Hashem, with an addition whose interest exceeds the principal. For some time I have wished to say what follows, and I shall therefore take this opportunity to do so, all the more so as these days are auspicious above and below.

Many strive to perpetuate, in a fitting manner, the eternal memory of their departed relatives — may Hashem grant them long life — or even their own memory, or the memory of members of their family. My father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, has shown the importance of the Chassidut* books you have published for this purpose. He asked that it be indicated on the title page of each one that it was published by you and for whose merit it was dedicated.

You were able to verify this by consulting the Torat Shmu'el* volumes, which can surely be obtained in Paris. Following your example, many Chassidim* did likewise.

I shall therefore formulate the following proposal, with my father-in-law the Rebbe Shlita's agreement. Publish as well a Chassidut* book — one of those ready for printing — for the elevation of your parents' souls.

Those souls will thereby receive great merit and derive much satisfaction from it. You must, in effect, take their succession and continue their work in the domain of Torah* and Mitzvot*. For someone such as yourself, it is surely unnecessary to explain what that means.

We are currently preparing the following books for publication:

1. The Tzemach Tzedek* on Shemot*, vol. 1.

2. The collection of chassidic discourses of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, delivered in 5704 and 5705.

3. The sequence of chassidic discourses of Rosh Hashana* 5708.

You may settle the printing costs over several months if a single payment is difficult. We simply need the certainty that, on fixed dates, the installment will reach us.

The costs are as follows. The first and second books, after deduction of sales proceeds, will come to two thousand dollars; the third, to one thousand dollars.

Considering these figures, you may be surprised that I propose giving such an amount. Nevertheless, after brief reflection and in view of the elevation it will bring to the aforementioned souls and of the bond you share with those souls, you will surely accept — with deep pleasure and desire — one of these proposals.

Please make your decision known to my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, as soon as possible.

For the new year, by showing Hashem your good resolutions and beginning it with what is connected to Torah* and Mitzvot* — in particular the deep teaching of Torah* — you will secure that it be so throughout the year, materially and spiritually.
