Greetings and blessings,

You write to me regarding your son Baruch Boaz shlita* (currently the Rav of the Lubavitch* community of Lod*). You should consult the beginning of the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, based on the glosses of the Rema*, Yoreh De'ah*, chapter 245, and on the Midrash* Tanchuma*, according to which, from the moment a child is three years old, he must also study from a text and not merely by heart, as he does from the time he begins to speak, according to the well-known explanation of our Sages.

This provides a simple answer to the question posed in the commentaries of the Gaon of Vilna*, chapter 245, paragraph 19, who states that he does not understand what is stated there.

You mention this Chassid* (the recipient of the preceding letter) and ask me which books you should recommend to him. You know him personally and can therefore determine what will be good for him, in order to guide him properly. Moreover, as his letter indicates, he will receive your directives with gratitude.

May Hashem grant that you achieve success in this matter, even though this man is in a distant location. This will be in addition to the efforts you invest regarding those who are close to you. The Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" but in a vastly increased manner. He will therefore grant you His help in all your concerns, spiritual and material.

...ובמ"ש אודות בנו ברוך בועז שליט"א. יעויין ריש הלכות תלמוד תורה לרבנו הזקן והוא ע"פ הגהות הרמ"א יו"ד סי' רמ"ה ומיוסד על המדרש תנחומא שתיכף בעבור שלש שנים יש ללמד את התינוק גם בענינים שבכתב נוסף על מה שמלמדו בעל פה משיתחיל לדבר וכמרז"ל הידוע.

ובזה סרה בפשיטות הקושיא בביאורי הגר"א שם ס"ק י"ט, איני מבין שיחתו וכו'.

במ"ש אודות הוו"ח כו'... איזה ספרים להורות לו ללמדם, הרי כיון שהכירו פנים אל פנים בודאי יכול לשער בהתאם לזה ולהורות לו, וכפי הנראה ממכתב הנ"ל, יקבל הוראותיו בחפץ לב. ויה"ר שיצליח גם בזה אף שהנ"ל נמצא בריחוק מקום נוסף על השתדלותו ויגיעתו בהנמצאים בקירוב אליו ומדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה אלא שכ"פ ככה להרבות הסייעתא דשמיא בהנוגע לעצמו במילי דשמיא ובמילי דארעא.
