Greetings and blessings,
From time to time, I ask the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, abounds in positive accomplishments and fine conduct, Rav Yaakov Ben Tzion Yurkovich shlita* (see the following letter), what is happening with you and what you are doing. He also reported to me what he wrote to you about your state of mind — or, more precisely, about your discouragement. He further conveyed to me what you yourself answered him concerning your spiritual state.
You know, on this subject, the saying (see letter no. 3795) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, leader of Israel: The prohibition of lashon hara* applies not only regarding one's fellow, but also regarding oneself. And the Rambam* specifies the distinction that must be made between lashon hara* and slander. The former can even be true, but it is, however, exaggerated — or even more than that.
Another point, which is essential: Various Chassidic texts establish that the seed planted in the earth will produce a harvest or a fruit tree only insofar as it first decomposes. It is therefore by losing its original existence that it enables the widest development.
Nevertheless, in what case is this decomposition positive? On the condition that it takes place in fertile soil, which is prepared for the harvest and irrigated. By contrast, if it takes place on a table, not only will it be of no use, but moreover, the seed itself will be lost.
Now, there is a similar distinction between sadness and bitterness, as the Tanya* explains. How does one distinguish between these situations so as not to be misled, and how does one determine the true nature of this decomposition and discouragement? By the actions that result from it. If it leads to an increased commitment to Jewish values, this will serve to "produce the harvest" and to multiply the seeds. If it weakens this commitment — all the more so if it eliminates it — it belongs to the second category.
You will surely understand this metaphor. It is indispensable that you fix a time for the study of Chassidus*. You should fix it both in time and in your mind. Then you will finally put into practice the precept: "Serve Hashem with joy."
With blessing to convey good tidings of all the above,
