To the young man Baruch Shalom (B. Sh. Cohen of Lod*),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter and to the request for a blessing it contained.

How fortunate is your lot! You have the merit to observe the fruits of what you have accomplished through the Chassidic farbrengens* you organized. Various texts of Chassidus* emphasize how much Hashem is pleased when a Jew draws closer to Him, to the Torah* and the mitzvos*.

The revealed dimension of the Torah* also alludes to this, as our Sages demonstrate when commenting on the verse: "He separates the grain from the chaff." And one can thus understand the opposition manifested by the forces of evil (given what can be accomplished at such gatherings). Now, the evil inclination takes on various guises. If it has no other means, it even affects one's fear of Hashem and claims that these gatherings are not a goal in themselves, do not bring about considerable elevation, but, on the contrary, cause a downfall.

But our Sages say: "I created the evil inclination and I created its antidote" — which is, in particular, Chassidus* and all that pertains to it.

You should therefore completely cease thinking about the machinations of the "old and foolish king" (the evil inclination). You should rage against it, as the holy Tanya* explains at length, and Hashem will grant you success.

הנה אשרי חלקו שזכה ורואה פירות בהשפעתו במשך ההתועדויות שסידר, וכמבואר בכ"מ בדא"ח גודל הנחת רוח שגורמים למעלה ע"י שמקרבים את מי מישראל להקב"ה תורתו ומצותי'. ונרמז גם בנגלה במרז"ל הידוע על הפסוק יקר מזולל, ומזה מובן גם כן התנגדות הלעו"ז לזה, שלכן בא היצה"ר בלבושים שונים ומשונים, ובמקום שאין לו עצה מתחפש בלבוש של יראת שמים, היינו שאין זה תכלית ועלי' נפלאה הנ"ל ירידה היא וכו' וכו'. וכבר אמרו רז"ל בראתי יצה"ר בראתי לו תורה תבלין, ובפרט תורת החסידות ועניני', ולכן יסיח דעת לגמרי מתחבולות מלך זקן וכסיל וירגיז עליו וכו', כמבואר בתניא קדישא בארוכה, והשי"ת יצליחו.
