Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from Kislev*, the month of the liberation (of the Alter Rebbe* from the tsarist prisons), in which you describe your current situation. You tell me that throughout your life you have not known good, and you ask that your name be mentioned (at the resting place of the Frierdiker Rebbe*), as well as those of your wife and children, in order to obtain a blessing.
It appears that you do not notice the contradiction in your letter.
How can a man whom the Creator has allowed to marry, to whom He has granted the blessing of children who will have long life, say that he has not known good throughout his entire life? There is a frightful ingratitude in this!
But without a doubt, these words will not invalidate the blessings that Hashem has granted you until now. Nevertheless, if this blessing is maintained and even increased, that does not mean one should continue to be ungrateful!
Hundreds, thousands of men pray every day to have children and would be ready to give everything they possess to have a single son or a single daughter. Yet they have not yet merited this — and may Hashem fulfill their request soon.
You yourself have received this blessing, seemingly without having needed to pray particularly for it. Yet you do not understand all the richness, all the happiness that this represents, and you use, twice in your letter, the expression cited above (that you have not known good in your lifetime). Moreover, you conclude by asserting that you do not think Hashem will help you, for it has been decreed that you would be poor and miserable throughout your entire existence, which Hashem forbid!
Obviously, I do not mean to say that one should be content with limited means or with a deficient state of health.
I simply wish to point out to you that perhaps this is the cause of your health problems and your material lack. For you do not acknowledge the blessings that Hashem has granted you in a domain even more essential than good health and material abundance. You have sons and daughters following the path of Hashem!
When one does not acknowledge the visible and tangible good that Hashem grants — moreover, when one does so in such a frightful manner that one can employ the terrible expressions found in your letter — how can one be surprised that one does not receive Heavenly blessings in other areas?
I hope that these few lines will suffice to open your eyes, so that you may observe reality as it truly is.
If you serve Hashem with genuine, profound joy, you will surely increase the blessings of Hashem for your health and for your livelihood, as various texts specify — in particular, the Zohar*, volume 2, page 184b.
You surely have a fixed time for the study of the revealed dimension of the Torah* and of Chassidus*. If not, you will establish one from now on. It would be good to have your tefillin* checked, as well as the mezuzos* of your home. Each weekday morning, before the morning prayer, you should give a few coins to tzedakah*.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
