To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav David (Rav D. Libman of Montreal),

Greetings and blessings,

I learned from the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and abounds in positive accomplishments, Rav Moshe Eliyahu Gerlitski, that you intend to visit for several weeks our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt speedily in our days by our righteous Moshiach*. It is said of this land that "the eyes of Hashem are always turned toward it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." One must therefore feel that this is so even during the preparations for the journey.

This can be compared to the preparations necessary when visiting a great prince, or all the more so, the king himself — and even more so, the King, King of kings. Nevertheless, this preparation must be carried out through the garments of one's soul, the innermost garments, for "the fear of Hashem is borne in the heart."

For this, one must therefore intensify one's study of Torah* and practice of mitzvos*, in the best possible manner. And nothing can stand in the way of the will, if one makes a sincere decision to make this addition to the fullest extent of one's means — and even more so if one is an emissary of a mitzvah* (charged with accomplishing a mitzvah*, for example giving tzedakah* upon arrival) for this journey.

May Hashem grant that you convey good tidings of all the above.

P.S.: You surely know the three studies concerning each individual, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. These are: Tehillim*, according to the monthly division, each day after the morning prayer; the Parshah* of the Chumash* from the weekly Sidra*, with the commentary of Rashi* — on Sunday from its beginning until Sheini*, on Monday from Sheini* to Shelishi*, and so on; and Tanya*, each day, according to its annual division. You will maintain these studies, at least from now on, and Hashem will grant you success.

ע"י הרה"ח נו"נ אי"א רב פעלים מו"ה משה אלי' שי' גערליצקי קבלתי הודעתו אשר מתכונן לנסיעה לבקר במשך איזה שבועות בארצנו הקדושה תבנה ותכונן על ידי משיח צדקנו במהרה בימינו, וכיון שזוהי הארץ אשר עלי' נאמר, עיני ה' אלקיך בה מראשית שנה ועד אחרית שנה, צריך להיות נרגש זה גם בההכנות לנסיעה, והוא על דרך כמו שמכינים עצמם לפני כניסה לשר גדול, ועל אחת כמה וכמה למלך ועל אחת כמה וכמה למלך מלכי המלכים, אלא שההכנה צריכה להיות בלבושי הנפש, לבושים הפנימים, כי הלא ד' יראה ללבב, והוא על ידי הוספה בשיעורי לימוד ועל ידי הוספה בהידור בקיום המצות, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון כשמחליטים באמת להוסיף בזה ככל היכולת, ומה טוב שיעשה הוא ג"כ שליח מצוה בנסיעה זו, ויהי רצון מהשם יתברך שיבשר טוב בכל האמור לעיל.

בודאי ידוע לו משלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמור זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, והם א) אמירת שיעור תהלים - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - בכל יום אחר תפלת הבקר, ב) לימוד פרשה חומש עם פירוש רש"י מהסדרה של השבוע (ביום א' מהתחלת הסדרה עד פרשת שני, ביום שני מפרשת שני עד שלישי וכו'), ג) לימוד שיעור תניא בכל יום - כפי שנחלק התניא לימות השנה, ועל כל פנים ישמור אותם מכאן ולהבא, והשי"ת יצליחו.
