To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Meir (Rav M. Gurkov of London; see letter no. 3958),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 11 Teves*, with its contents. You interpret the correspondence I sent you by concluding that words not leading to action can be considered futile, their purpose not having been realized.

I must not have been sufficiently precise in my statement, for this is by no means what I meant, which Hashem forbid. I was alluding to the talks delivered here during the Chassidic farbrengen*, and the meaning of all this is quite simple: If one puts into practice what I say by encouraging others, with words emanating from the heart, one does not need to observe the concrete actions that result from it (the value of an action cannot be evaluated based on the results it produces, for those are not quantifiable).

And one finds a similar explanation regarding the search for chametz* (see letter no. 4244). Indeed, one rightly recites a blessing when conducting this search, even if no chametz* is found — for the mitzvah* is to search for it (not to find it).

The same applies to the mitzvah* of rebuking one's fellow. Our Sages ask whether one must go so far as to strike him, in a case where, if one does not reach this extreme, the rebuke will have no effect. Nevertheless, the mitzvah* is not thereby negated. It is not the same, however, for the talk I deliver, which must be considered independently (and has meaning only insofar as it is followed by effect).

I hope that these few lines will produce their effect and achieve their purpose, leading you to redouble your ardor in your efforts. Moreover, you know the statement of our holy master (the Frierdiker Rebbe*) that an effort is never in vain.

With blessing for success in your work, regarding all the above,
