Rav Ze'ev Tzvi (Rav Z. T. Weber of Yerushalayim*; see letter no. 3852),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the third day of Chanukah*, in which you inquire about the place of the serpent in Gan Eden* (at the time of creation, alongside Adam and Chavah*) and about the explanations our Sages give on this subject in Tractate Sanhedrin* 59b.

Various texts provide these explanations, and they are also found, by allusion, in the revealed dimension of the Torah*. Our Sages say, indeed, in Tractate Yoma* 69b: "They sought a fresh egg for a sick person throughout all of Eretz Yisroel*, but could not find one (because the evil inclination had disappeared from the world)... The world is thus heading toward destruction." (Thus, evil is necessary for good to be revealed, and this explains the presence of the serpent in Gan Eden*.) You should also consult the introduction of the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, page 19b.
