Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of 28 Cheshvan*, which followed a particularly long silence and which, moreover, reached me with delay. I respond here in the order of the questions posed:

A) You are correct in emphasizing that pedagogy proscribes the use of corporal punishment. Very often, what is gained by acting in this manner is negated by the far more significant harm that results. You must understand what I mean. Experience shows that firmness that takes on a pleasant aspect is more effective.

B) Your plan to leave your teaching position in order to become an accountant or a clerk is not acceptable to me. Indeed, it seems, according to the information in my possession, that you derive from it both your material and your spiritual sustenance.

C) You mention lightning and thunder. You should therefore have your tefillin* checked, as well as the mezuzos* of your home. You should keep near you a photograph of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us — especially when these occurrences are frequent. A brief reflection will then suffice for you to no longer be seized by fear. Moreover, you know what our Sages say on this subject. According to them, these phenomena serve to straighten the crooked parts of the heart.

D) You have been assigned to give classes to religious soldiers. Obviously, one must take full advantage of this opportunity to bring them even closer to our Torah*, the Torah* of life, and to its mitzvos*. Thus, "their encampment shall be holy."

Likewise, it is clear that one should not content oneself with soldiers who are already religious. One must endeavor, with determination, that those who are not yet religious join your audience as well. Indeed, it is also about them that it is said: "I sleep in exile, but my heart is awake" — as explained, in particular, in the Derech Chaim* of the Mitteler Rebbe*, which emphasizes that this is even more powerful than teshuvah*. You should consult the Derech Chaim*, published by Kehot, beginning from page 182.

Words that emanate from the heart penetrate the heart of those who listen to you, and ultimately, they produce their effect.

E) You are considering settling in another city. You must, first of all, ensure that you will be able to earn a living there and not content yourself with assumptions.

F) You say, at the beginning and end of your letter, that you approached this couple — that is, this man and his wife — asking them to work in the framework of education based on sacred values, in the domain of Chabad*. But they did not accept your proposal, and you enumerate the reasons.

However, of what use are these reasons, since, at the end of the day, they do not contribute to an institution of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us? Obviously, proper education in every place remains a fundamental matter. But this also leads one to voice a complaint, as it is said: "They made me keeper of the vineyards, but my own vineyard I have not kept" — even if the Torah* bears witness that those of others are indeed vineyards. All of this is self-evident, and it is surely unnecessary to say more.

G) As you request, I will mention your name and those of the members of your family at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, so that you may obtain the fulfillment of all your needs, material and spiritual.

With blessing to convey good tidings of all the above,
