To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Baruch (Rav B. Levittin; see letters no. 2034 and 4117),

Greetings and blessings,

I have not heard from you for a very long time. May Hashem grant that the reason is that everything is going well — for in such a case, there is no reason to write(?) (the Rebbe places a question mark in parentheses at the end of this sentence, to underscore its ironic character) — even though our holy masters, whose merit protects us, never accepted this approach and waited, hoped that they would nonetheless receive good tidings. Furthermore, you are surely active in matters pertaining to Yiddishkeit*, and your accomplishments in this area are significant. You therefore have much to relate.

Some time ago, I read a description of the battle you waged in order to preserve the character of your synagogue (presumably its Orthodox character, in the face of attacks from Reform Jews). I observed that the judge ruled in your favor, based on the charter of that synagogue. Now, a synagogue in Pittsburgh is confronting the same problem, due to the ideas of some of its members. According to the information that has reached me, the arguments you advanced apply to this case in the same way. I therefore believe that if you send the relevant parties your court file and the final verdict, you will render them a great service.

Moreover, the custom of this country is that a judge gives great weight to the opinion and decision of another judge who faced the same case. If the production of this file entails expenses — for example, to compensate administrative employees — it is obvious that Machane Israel* will cover them and will send you a check in the amount you indicate.

You may send this court file to my secretariat, which will forward it to Pittsburgh, or directly to that city, to Mr. Cohn, whose address appears below. In the latter case, I would be grateful if you would let me know that you have acceded to my request.

I send my blessing and greetings to the Chassidim* of your city, as well as to those who think they are not yet Chassidim*. For all Jews are brothers, and the only difference between them is the following: Some know what they are and feel it, while others live in error, waiting for someone to make them aware, to explain to them that all Jews bear a collective responsibility.

Awaiting your good tidings,
