Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the 17th of Teves* (the Rebbe writes "Tov" — "good" — a word whose numerical value is seventeen), in which you express your desire to connect yourself to the teachings and the practice of Chabad*, to be among those who are attached (to the Rebbe).

Several holy letters provide you with an answer, and it is also found in the Hayom Yom*, at the date of the 24th of Sivan*. To be truly attached to someone, one must study the Torah* teachings he expounds. By learning the Chassidic discourses, by reading the talks, by connecting with the Chassidim* and the students of the Yeshivah* in their studies and their Chassidic farbrengens*, by putting into practice my request to recite Tehillim*, by maintaining the fixed time for study — one is truly attached.

What has just been said delivers a teaching of general scope, applying to all. But in this matter, as in everything concerning Torah* and mitzvos*, there are also specific points for each person according to what concerns him — such as influencing the students in general, and those of Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Lod* in particular. It is through this portal that Torah* and mitzvos* ascend, that the blessings they bring are revealed. One must therefore be particularly scrupulous in this matter, as indicated in Iggeres HaKodesh*, at the end of chapter 7. And words that emanate from the heart enter the heart.

As you request, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us.

במענה על מכתבו מטו"ב טבת, בו כותב אשר רצונו להתדבק בתורת ודרך חב"ד ולהיות מהמקושרים.

וכבר מלתו אמורה בכמה מאגרות הקדש והועתק גם בלוח היום יום - כ"ד סיון - ההתקשרות האמיתית היא ע"י לימוד התורה, כשהוא לומד המאמרי חסידות, קורא את השיחות ומתחבר עם ידידי אנ"ש ותלמידי התמימים יחיו בלימודם והתוועדות, ומקיים בקשתי באמירת תהלים ובשמירת זמני הלימודים, הנה בזה היא ההתקשרות.

והנ"ל היא הוראה כללית השוה לכל נפש, ומובן שגם בזה כמו בשאר עניני התורה ומצות ישנם ענינים מיוחדים לכאו"א לפי ענינו ובהנוגע אליו, הפעולה במושפעיו בכלל ובתומכי תמימים בלוד בפרט, כיון שזהו השער שלו דרך בו עולים ויורדים התורה ומצוה וההמשכות - שבזה, צריך להיות זהיר טפי וכמובן גם מאגה"ק סוף סי' ז', ודברים היוצאים מן הלב נכנסים אל הלב.
