Igrot Kodesh · Letter 408 — Tanya Textual Corrections and Negative Theology

Volume 3 · Letter 3

[Ten Days of Teshuvah 5709[1]]

By the grace of Hashem,

May you be definitively sealed for a good year and know success, materially and spiritually,

Menachem M. Schneerson

P.S. You write to me in your letter:

A) At the end of the seventh chapter of Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah*, at the tenth line, one should read 'Madregat'* (the level) and not 'Madregato'* (its level).

I made the same remark in my commentary on the Tanya* and stated that the same correction was likely needed at the eleventh line as well. It is, however, difficult to verify. We do not possess the manuscript, and this passage was printed for the first time in the edition of 5660[2], produced, according to the editor's preface, from a copy.

On page 88b, however, third line from the bottom of the page, it appears that one should read 'Mimadregat'*. I was able to verify that Rabbi Asher the shochet* adopts this reading as well, in his Tanya*, which is found at the home of Rav Kazarnovsky, his son-in-law.

B) Echad* (one), by permutation of letters, becomes Va'ed* (eternity).

I explained this, to the best of my humble understanding, and indicated as reference the fascicle published for 12 Tammuz*[3], on page 6. This explanation appears in the issue of Kovets Lubavitch* currently in press[4].

C) The perception we can have of the Divine is negative[5].

On this subject, there is a discussion among the Sages — both of Israel and of other nations — as to whether the attributes ascribed to Hashem are systematically negative or whether they may also be positive.

The teaching of Chabad* considers that both may be found, and that there is even a third category, which is entirely negative.

You will consult, on this subject, the Likkutei Torah*, the chassidic discourses* of 5666, 5670[6], 5693[7], and others.

However, only the intellect, in perceiving the Divine, receives a negative formulation. This perception is, by contrast, consistently positive when it emanates from the depth of the heart. One of these chassidic discourses* specifies this.
