To Stolman[2],

I have received your letter and I wish to thank you, on behalf of Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch* and on my own behalf, for the esteem and the laudatory considerations you express regarding the work of our institution in your correspondence. This helps us greatly, particularly at a time when the difficulties and obstacles are increasing, while those who support and assist us are becoming fewer.

You used the image of an atomic explosion and chain reaction. The scientists who worked on the atomic bomb had to solve three problems:

1. In a positive situation, it was necessary that the first atoms exploding under the effect of the bomb be capable of causing others to explode in turn, which would in turn have the same effect, so that the quantity of energy released would become ever greater.

2. In a negative situation, on the other hand, it was necessary to discover a means of reducing the number of atoms that had exploded.

3. The energetic and financial costs of the explosion had to be lower than the yield derivable from the energy thus released. Indeed, the experiments and research in this field were not purely theoretical. They had to have an impact on life, to make it more pure and more beautiful.

It is of course unnecessary to describe to you what follows from this image.

I wish you once again, together with all the members of your family, to be definitively inscribed for a good year, to have increased means in the coming year, and to have the will to mobilize all your strengths to follow the path that has been traced for all of Israel since it stood at the foot of Mount Sinai — that is, the path of Torah and Mitzvot*, particularly those connected with a good education.

And may the blessing that my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, granted you be fulfilled.

אאשר קבלת מכתבו. ואביע ת"ח בשם המל"ח ובשמי, בעד הערכתו את עבודת המל"ח בתוארים נעלים כמו אלו אשר במכ', אשר זה מעודד ומחזק את הרוח. חיזוק הנחוץ ביותר בזמן האחרון, כאשר המניעות ועכובים לעבודה ע"פ תכנית המל"ח הולכים רבים וגדלים, המסייעים הולכים נחלשים ומתמעטים, ותכנית העבודה הולכת וגדלה מחדש לחדש ומשבוע לשבוע, מבלי כל אפשריות להקטינה אם לא ע"ח קרבנות (ברוח ובמילא גם בגוף) של קהל אלו הנעזרים ע"י המל"ח, אשר אחריות כזו א"א לקחת אותה ע"ע.

ובהמשך למשל הנאה שבמכתבו, להפצצת האטום והאנרגיא העצומה המשתחררת עי"ז:

בטח ידוע לו שבענין הנ"ל - מהשאלות העקריות שעמדו בפני אנשי המדע, ושבפתרונם הי' תלוי הצלחת כל הדבר היו:

1) chain process היינו שבענינים הרצויים אפשר יהי' להגיע לזה שחלקי אטום הראשונים הנפצצים ע"י המכונה יפוצצו מספר אטומים אחרים שהם יפוצצו מספר אטומים יותר גדול היינו שהאנרגיא תלך הלוך וגדול.

2) בענינים אי רצוים אפשר יהי' לסדר שמספר אטומים הנפצצים ילך הלוך וחסר.

3) שההוצאות (באנרגיא ובממון) בהפצצת האטום תהי' קטנה ביחס לההכנסה ע"י האנרגיא שמשתחררת ע"י ההפצצה. כיון שתכלית כל הנסיונות והעבודה במקצוע הי' לא לשם טיאוריא בלבד כ"א כדי לנצל אותם בחיים, וכדי לעשות עי"ז את החיים זכים ויפים יותר.

והנמשל בטח אין צריך ביאור לדכוותי'.

עוה"פ אאחל לו ולכב"ב שי' חוגמח"ט ואשר בשנה הבע"ל תגדל גם היכולת שלו וגם הרצון שלו לנצל כוחותיו בדרך אשר הותווה בשביל כל עם ישראל מיום עמדם על ה"ס, היא דרך התומ"צ ובפרט בשדה חנוך הכשר ותקוים הברכה אשר ברכו כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש.
