Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Wednesday, in which you tell me that you have become aware of your origins, since you come from a family of Chabad* Chassidim*, and you are beginning to adopt the Chassidic ways. You have fixed a time for the study of Torah* and you ask me for directives in this matter.

It is clear that the details and the duration of this study are not identical for everyone. Everything depends on the conditions of the moment. It would therefore be wise to seek counsel from the elder Chassidim* who are near you. They will indicate what is appropriate, based on what they learned and received from the Chassidic guides of earlier eras.

In any event, the general idea is as follows: One must study Chassidus* at least twice during the twenty-four hours of the day — once during the day and another time at night. One must study it before the morning prayer. Indeed, the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 98, end of paragraph 1, specifies that such study enables one to become aware of the greatness of Hashem. You should consult this text.

Obviously, one must approach Chassidus* as one does the other parts of our holy Torah* — that is, by proclaiming "we will do and (then) we will understand," and not the reverse (seeking to understand before submitting), for then "the integrity of the upright guides them" (i.e., study does indeed lead to the proper explanation), which is not the case otherwise — as explained in Tractate Shabbos* 88a.

May Hashem grant you the merit and success to convey good tidings of all the above. And Hashem will help you in an increased manner if you guide your friends in this direction, bringing them closer to the light and the luminary of the Torah*, its practices and its customs.

With blessing for success in all the above,

P.S.: You ask me why one must wear a beard (see also letter no. 2332 on this subject). The responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Yoreh De'ah*, chapter 93, explain at length the reason, according to the inner dimension of the Torah*. The explanation from the inner dimension of the Torah* is found in the Peirush HaMillos* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, commenting on the verse: "He is merciful and will atone for the sin." This text is found in the Derech Mitzvosecha*, volume 2, and in the addenda to the Tehillim* with the commentary of the Tzemach Tzedek*, page 626.

You should therefore consult these explanations, which are pleasant, and you will see how important this is, particularly for young men.
