To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaCohen (Rav E. E. Yalles of Philadelphia; see letter no. 3948),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the day of the Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*, the 24th of Teves*. May Hashem grant that the formula transmitted by tradition and sanctified by many generations be fulfilled in this matter: "May his merit protect us." He will protect us when we devote ourselves to him and even when we do not (a paraphrase of what is said regarding Torah study). For the masters of Chabad* demand that everything be profound, and they themselves are entirely one with the Torah*, as stated in Tractate Sotah* 21a (the Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Including according to the conclusion of that text, since this refers to a Torah scholar who possesses the fear of Hashem, as stated in the Gemara* and as explained by the Tosafos* in Tractate Chagigah* 15b"). This imparts a teaching to all who are connected to them and, through them, to the entire Jewish people.

I am enclosing what has just been published. An excerpt is included relating to the Hilloula*, but it is not complete.

On the occasion of your birthday, I send you my blessing for a year of success and for conveying good tidings.

I have just received your postcard. You cite the Torah Or*, page 55a, which states: "The Attribute of Malchus* of the world of Atzilus* has its source in that of the Ein Sof*, which is Malchus* of Adam Kadmon*." You note that the order appears not to be correct, since Ein Sof* is above Adam Kadmon*.

In my understanding, the phrase "which is Malchus* of Adam Kadmon*" should be interpreted as a parenthetical remark. This is why the Chassidic discourse does not comment on it. It is merely a clarification of what constitutes the extension of Malchus* of the Ein Sof*. The text therefore explains that this refers to Malchus* of Adam Kadmon* — the Will that encompasses within it the entire chain of worlds, as various texts emphasize. You should consult, in particular, the Eitz Chaim*, Gate 3, Chapter 1, which states: "Atik* is Malchus* of Adam Kadmon*," and the beginning of Ateres Rosh* of the Mitteler Rebbe*.
