Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me about the thoughts that disturb your study of Torah* and your service of Hashem*. You conclude by describing the organization of your day.
In fact, one point explains the other. In the organization of your day, there is no study, no activity that arouses the love and awe of Hashem*, much less the consciousness of His unity. Obviously, this does not mean proclaiming that "Hashem* is one" without knowing what His unity corresponds to, for it is in this regard that it is said: "They flatter Him with their mouths... but their heart is not with Him."
It is evident, and one can verify it concretely, that the study of ethics has the effect of improving people's conduct. For how does one come to love and fear Him? By meditating on His greatness, as the Rambam* explains in his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah*, beginning of the second chapter.
When there is a deficiency in these three mitzvos* (love, awe, and the proclamation of His unity) — which one must observe at all times, as emphasized in the introduction to the Sefer HaChinuch* — the prayer* is also imperfect. It is said, indeed, that "one begins to pray with a 'heavy head' (with humility)." According to the students of Rabbeinu Yonah*, and as the halachah* is decided in the Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 98, end of paragraph 1, this means that one must meditate on the greatness of Hashem* and on the smallness of man.
Concretely, you must immediately establish, in a fixed manner in terms of time and intent, a study of the inner dimension of the Torah*, which in our era has been revealed through Chassidus*. You should therefore have one study session during the day, another at night, and at least a few minutes before prayer*, in order to put into practice what the Mishnah* previously cited says regarding prayer* (that it be offered with a "heavy head").
Likewise, you should scrupulously observe the ritual immersion of Ezra* (after every conjugal relation). To strengthen Heavenly assistance, you should set aside, each weekday morning, without making a vow, a few coins for tzedakah*. In this way, according to the expression of our Sages*: "He gives a coin to a poor person and then he prays."
May Hashem* grant that you begin to put all of this into practice sincerely and as soon as possible. May Hashem* grant you success.
With blessing,
For the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
