To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Shalom Mendel,

Greetings and blessings,

You have informed me of the birth of your daughter, with Mazel Tov*, Mazel Tov*.

May Hashem* grant that you raise her, together with your wife and all your children, to Torah*, to the wedding canopy, and to good deeds, in abundance.

As the Rebbe Rashab* said (see letters no. 1760 and 4156), our custom is to say "to Torah*" and not only "to the wedding canopy and to good deeds" even for the birth of a daughter (although she is not obligated to study Torah*). Our Sages* explain, indeed, in Tractate Berachos* 17a: "In what does the merit of women consist? In having Torah* taught (to their children), in having Torah* studied (by their husbands), and in waiting (for their husbands' return from the house of study)."

I have received your letter of 3 Teves*. You tell me that you turned on the electric light (presumably on Shabbos*, due to the delivery) without having been able to ask what the halachah* is in this matter. That is indeed what needed to be done according to our Torah*, Torah of life, as indicated in the Shulchan Aruch*, chapter 328.

Please also consult the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 330, end of paragraph 3, specifying what may be done for a woman who has reached the ninth month of her pregnancy. Paragraph 1 further addresses the absence of a candle and the fear she then experiences.

You ask me about combinations of names (family names combined with those of the masters of Chabad* and their wives). My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, did not want the names of our masters to be combined with other names.
