To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Shneur Zalman,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 27 Kislev*, after you had ceased writing to me. You discuss the Chassidishe farbrengen* on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, the festival during which He redeemed our soul in peace, when the light and vitality of our souls were granted to us.

This day is defined as the Rosh Hashanah* of Chassidus* and its ways. And we indeed speak of the "head" of the year and not of its "beginning" (see letters no. 3989 and 4018), for it is this festival that distributes vitality to all the days of the year. And you will endeavor to ensure that this is indeed the case — that everyone preserves the inspiration throughout the year.

It is said, indeed, that a person is inscribed and sealed (for a good year) on Rosh Hashanah*. Despite this, he is judged every day, in order to draw down this light (which was granted to him on Rosh Hashanah*) on a daily basis and reveal it in the world, as indicated in the Likkutei Torah*, at the end of Parshas Korach*, and in the Kuntres U'Maayan*.

Obviously, I am not referring solely to you, but to every Chassid* and to all together. And you know the ruling of the Heavenly Court, according to which — by virtue of the self-sacrifice* the Alter Rebbe* displayed for Chassidus* — all those who are connected to him and follow his path will prevail in all matters concerning Torah*, awe of Heaven, and good character traits.

לאחרי ההפסק במכתביו, נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מז"ך כסלו, בו כותב אודות ההתועדות דיום הבהיר י"ט כסלו, החג אשר פדה בשלום נפשנו ואור וחיות נפשנו ניתן לנו, וכיון שנקרא ר"ה ללימוד החסידות ולדרכי החסידות, וידוע הדיוק בלשון הקדש ולא תחלה, כי ממנו צ"ל נמשך חיות לכל שאר ימות השנה, שבודאי ישתדלו גם בזה וע"ד המבואר שלאחרי הכתיבה וחתימה טובה בראש השנה ישנו גם הענין דנידון בכל יום - כדי להמשיך דבר יום ביומו, יעוין לקו"ת ס"פ קורח, בקונטרס ומעין וכו', ומובן שלא אליו בלבד הכוונה בהנ"ל, אלא לכאו"א מאנ"ש ולכולם ביחד, וכבר ידוע פס"ד בית דין שלמעלה: בגלל המסירות נפש (של רבינו הזקן) על תורת החסידות פסקו בבי"ד של מעלה אשר בכל ענין של תורה יראת שמים ומדות טובות תהי' יד מקושריו והולכי בעקבותיו על העליונה.
