To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Dovid Meir,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the fourth day of Teves*, the month during which "the body derives pleasure from physical closeness with another body" (because it is cold and one warms oneself thus; see also letter no. 4013), as our Sages* explain in Tractate Megillah* 13a. This is one of the reasons why this month is called Teves* — from the same root as tov*, meaning good. Indeed, the Torah* ratified the new names (of the months, which we know today; previously one simply said "first month," "second month," etc.) that were brought back from Bavel*. It thus confirms the positive character of this month.
The teaching of Chassidus* allows one to state the deeper reason. In the World to Come, the soul will derive its vitality from the body, whose source is particularly lofty. This is why it descends so low and receives a physical existence.
At present, all of this remains hidden, but in the World to Come, the truth will be revealed. Herein lies the full import of the verse: "And Esther was brought to King Achashverosh in the tenth month, that of Teves*." In this month, indeed, the Jewish souls — called Esther during the period of exile — were brought before the King of the world, "Who possesses the beginning and the end," as we have seen.
May Hashem* grant you long days and pleasant years, with a healthy body, as well as to your wife, who should have a long life. And may there be fulfilled in you the teaching of the Rambam*, according to which "having a healthy and whole body is part of the ways of Hashem*."
With blessing for good tidings regarding all of the above,
(Rav D. M. Shulman of Brooklyn; see, regarding him, letters no. 3258 and 4165.)
