Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Sunday, in which you pose the following question: When a person feels the desire to assume communal responsibilities or another mission upon which the merit of the public depends, how can he determine whether his initiative is for the sake of Heaven or whether it is self-interested?

Here is my answer:

A) You know the talk (see letters no. 3481 and 4169) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, according to which — despite the necessity of taking stock of all one's actions and words — one must do so only at the times that are propitious for it.

The same applies to a businessman. If he audits his accounts too frequently, not only will he gain nothing from it, but he will also have to devote the time and energy that should have been used to develop and consolidate his business. Sometimes, he will be hampered in his work, for overly frequent auditing is not beneficial.

The same applies to the spiritual self-accounting intended for the service of Hashem*. This has specific moments in the year — for example, during the Ten Days of Teshuvah*, or on the eve of Rosh Chodesh*, which is called "the minor Yom Kippur*."

B) You know the saying of the Rebbe Rashab* (see letters no. 2338, 2492, 2933, and 4244), father of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, according to which the criterion for determining the source of a thought or desire, when one is in doubt, is as follows: Does it prevent one from doing a good deed? If so, it is almost certain that its source is not pure.

C) You know the explanation of the Sifri*, on Parshas Ki Seitzei*, 29:19, according to which one who lost a coin that was subsequently found by a poor person has indeed fulfilled the mitzvah* of tzedakah*, even though he did not intend it, did not want it, and knew nothing of it.

The same applies to the form of tzedakah* that constitutes communal activities and helping one's fellow in all that pertains to Torah* and mitzvos*.

Consequently, eliminate all the thoughts that prevent you from putting into practice your desire to do good for others through certain communal activities. Undertake them and Hashem* will grant you success. Our Sages* emphasize that a person sanctifies himself a little here below, and Hashem* then confers upon him great holiness*. Jews attain this sanctification when they fulfill the mitzvos*, as specified in the blessing recited at that time: "He has sanctified us through His mitzvos*."

I hope that you study Chassidus* every day. May Hashem* grant you success so that you convey good tidings about all of this.

With blessing,
