Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 23 Kislev*, in which you ask me whether you should begin to pray according to the rite* of the Arizal*. No doubt you are referring not to the Sefardi rite, but to that of the Arizal* as established by the Alter Rebbe*.
It is unnecessary to detail all the qualities of this rite*. These are partially set forth in the introduction to the Shaar HaKollel*, which is printed in the Siddur* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*. According to tradition, the Alter Rebbe* established its text from sixty different Siddurim* and rites. But you should know that, according to what is stated in the Responsa Beis HaYotzer and Minchas Elazar, volume 1, one may change from the Ashkenazi rite to the Sefardi rite, and from the Sefardi rite to that of the Arizal*, but not the reverse. If you commit to following the rite of the Arizal*, you must do so permanently.
Reflect, therefore, in order to determine whether your decision is permanent. If so, Hashem* will fulfill the wish of your heart, you will be able to pray according to the rite of the Alter Rebbe*, leader of Yisrael*, and you will receive blessing.
You ask me how to organize your study and distribute it among the hours of the day. Please discuss this with the Chassidim* who are in your area. Specify to them the level of your knowledge and your schedule until now. In this way, they will be able to guide you.
You mention, in your letter, the necessity of dividing one's time into three thirds. Please consult, on this subject, the commentaries of the Talmud* at that reference. In practical application, follow the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 2, which you should also consult.
You surely know the three daily study practices that pertain to everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. They involve the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known. You no doubt observe them, or at the very least will do so in the future.
With blessing,
For the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
