To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Aharon Elimelich (Rav A. E. Shaulsohn, of Rechovot; see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3933),

Greetings and blessings,

I have heard about you for a long time already, and I was therefore pleased to receive your letter, which followed that of the Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Yaakov Weiss. I enclose a copy of the response I am sending him.

Basing myself on the teaching of our Sages that "one encourages eagerness only in those who possess this quality by nature," I seize this opportunity to point out to you that many youth in your city attend the schools, according to the information reaching me. Moreover, this is the predominant situation, which must therefore be taken into account. Now, this youth must be encouraged and strengthened in the spirit of the Tradition of Israel.

If anyone can take it upon himself to encourage them, with words that emanate from the heart, it is indeed you. You can ensure that these words penetrate their hearts, transform them, and lead them to action, including in their daily existence.

A few generations before the present era, one might have thought that the youth should be contained, in order to shelter them from the various winds blowing in the world, ensuring that the study of Torah* be their sole activity. But for the past two generations, it has been verified that a specific study, arousing the fear of Hashem and the sentiments of the heart, must also be provided for each one. Without this, the study of Torah* can be very detrimental. Indeed, everything would have been different if there had been no opposition to that which instills the fear of Hashem. Hundreds, thousands of youth in our era would not have strayed from the right path. And there is no need to say more — so painful is this.

One generation ago, one might have thought that the study of Mussar*, of Jewish ethics, was sufficient. Then the ordeal silenced those who made this claim. For we saw concretely, with our own eyes of flesh, in Russia, during the persecutions emanating from the Bolsheviks, the difficulties to which the youth, in particular, were subjected. Now, those who, thanks to the appropriate education, were permeated with Chassidus*, with enthusiasm and self-sacrifice, overcame the ordeal and were saved from this formidable peril.

Due to our transgressions and to our misfortune, the ordeals to which the youth are subjected have not diminished in recent years. They have merely changed form, and henceforth, they are no longer physical. Moreover, they take the appearance of a mitzvah*, begin in the domain of holiness, and are sometimes even its emanation. Thus, our Sages say, "A falsehood in which there is not a little good (is not credible)." In this case, the ordeals are thereby increased, especially in their qualitative dimension.

To someone such as yourself, it is surely unnecessary to describe in greater detail the current situation, including in the Holy Land. It is terrible and terrifying, all the more so as it concerns "the land upon which the eyes of Hashem are always directed, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" and "the palace of the King cannot be compared (to what is outside this palace)."

Here is the conclusion of all this, for it is clear that my purpose is not to discourse. You have the merit and the responsibility of making use of your abilities and your possibilities in order to transmit the luminary of the Torah*, that is, Chassidus*, its practices and its customs, to those around you in general, and to the youth — who are called upon to build Jewish homes — in particular. Every positive development observed in them is multiplied many times over, according to the number of members of the family they will establish and the persons they will influence.

You are a descendant of the Alter Rebbe*, who gave the well-known teaching (see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3933) according to which the precepts "You shall love your fellow as yourself" and "You shall love Hashem your Elokim*" are one. Such is also the content of the statement of Rabbi Akiva, defining the love of one's fellow as "a great principle of the Torah*" (see tractate Shabbos* 68a).

You will surely know success on this path, and everything depends solely on your will. Moreover, you know the ruling of the Heavenly Court according to which, thanks to the self-sacrifice that the Alter Rebbe* displayed for Chassidus*, those who are connected to him and follow his path would prevail in all that concerns the Torah*, the fear of Hashem, and good conduct.

In expectation of your good tidings, I conclude by presenting my respects and my blessing,
