Greetings and blessings,

I was struck with alarm when I received, these past days, the visit of the Rav of Helmitz (Rav Chaim Yom Tov Lipa Deutsch), who currently resides in Cleveland. Responding to my question, he told me that he had not heard of a mikveh* in his city (see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3662). He therefore feared that nothing had been done. Now, I have just received your letter of the second day of Rosh Chodesh* Kislev, and I learn therein that this fear is indeed well-founded.

You tell me that the moral situation is low. This is, on the contrary, all the more reason, an increased responsibility, underscoring how necessary it is to rectify the situation. For others are not aware of the importance and gravity of all this.

The same applies to all the other deficiencies you observe in your community. You seem to deduce from them that you should do nothing, whereas logically, you should arrive at the opposite conclusion.

Divine Providence led you to a certain place, of which you are the Rav. You accepted this appointment and you therefore bear the responsibility. Conversely, our Sages have informed us that Hashem demands only in proportion to the strength He grants. It is therefore certain that you possess all the strength necessary to fulfill your mission.

You know what the halachah* says about a deposit that one guards without receiving remuneration. From the moment one thinks of moving it — according to the more stringent view — or in any case, upon the actual carrying out of this movement, the person assumes responsibility for what ensues, according to tractate Bava Metzia 43b.

You wrote to me that the cost of the mikveh* would be approximately five hundred dollars, and I am prepared to obtain a loan of this amount, repayable in twenty months. Perhaps in this way you will be able more easily to awaken the point of Judaism that resides in the heart of each person, in order to obtain the purity of the children of Israel, which also prepares the fulfillment of the promise that "I will sprinkle pure waters upon you."

May Hashem grant that this be so, as soon as possible and in complete integrity.

I send you what has recently been published. No doubt you will make its content accessible to the broadest public. The merit of the community depends on you.

מה נבהלתי כשביקרני ימים אלו הרב דהעלמיץ שי' (הדר עתה בקלעוולאנד) ועל שאלתי, אמר לי שלא שמע מאומה אודות מקוה במחנו הט', ולכן ירא הוא לחשש שעדיין לא נעשה הדבר. והנה עתה קבלתי מכתבו מבדר"ח כסלו, וקורא הנני בו שחשש זה מבוסס.

ומה שכותב שמצב הרוחני בשפלות וכו', היר אדרבה זה טעם נוסף ועוד מגדיל את האחריות שלו לתקן הענינים, כיון שהשאר אינם יודעים מגודל וחומר הענין. וה"ה לשאר המגרעות שכותב בעניני הקהלה, וכנראה מסקנתו מהם שאין צריך לעבוד בה, בה בשעה שמסקנת שכל הישר צ"ל דוקא הפכית, אשר כיון שההשגחה הפרטית הביאתו למקום פלוני ובתור רב מרא דאתרא וקבל עליו המינוי, הרי האחריות היא עליו. ולאידך גיסא כיון שהודיעו רז"ל שאין הקב"ה מבקש אלא לפי כחן, הרי בודאי שהקדימו לתת לו כל הכחות הדרושים למילוי התפקיד. וכבר ידוע הדין אפילו בענין של פקדון שאין מקבלין שכר, אשר מי שחשב להטותה לדברי המחמיר, ועכ"פ, אם היתה איזה פעולה ע"י המופקד, כל האחריות עליו. (ב"מ מ"ג, ב).

כמדומה שמאז כתב שהוצאות הכרוכות בענין המקוה הוא לערך חמש מאות דולר, ומוכן הנני בעזה"י להשיג הלואה על סכום זה על מנת שישלמו אותה במשך 20 חדשים, ופשר באופן כזה יקל עליו לעורר את נקודת היהדות אשר בלב כאו " א מישראל, בכדי להביא בפועל ענין טהרת בני ישראל שהוא ג"כ הכנה לקיום היעוד וזרקתי עליכם מים טהורים, ויה"ר שיהי' בהקדם ובשלימות.

מוסג"פ מה שהו"ל בזמן האחרון אשר בטח יזכה בתוכנו גם את הרבים וזכות הרבים תלוי בו.
