To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Nissan (Rav N. Telushkin, of New York, author of Taharat Mayim on the laws of the mikveh*; see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3304),
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your book, the first volume of "The Torah and the World." I thank you for having thought to send it to me. Leafing through it, to the extent that my time permits, I observed with pleasure that it was introduced by a saying of the Baal Shem Tov* and concluded, in the manner of its introduction, by a statement of the Tzemach Tzedek*. The content of the book possesses, certainly, its own merit, but as elevated as it may be, it can additionally serve a cause even more elevated — namely, that of the dissemination of the wellsprings (of Chassidus*, to the outside).
Thus, it is recounted (see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3866) among the Chassidim* that the great Rav, Chassid* and tzaddik*, Rabbi Hillel of Paritch, explained that he multiplied the most stringent practices in his observance of mitzvos* in order to better understand Chassidus*.
One finds various explanations on this subject also in the revealed dimension of the Torah*. Thus, various precepts, in addition to their specific content, also serve as preparation for other commandments of more global import. Indeed, the ultimate purpose of the Torah* and mitzvos* is precisely this totality, as it is stated: "Hashem our Elokim* commanded us to fulfill all these decrees in order to fear Hashem our Elokim*." The characteristic of this period of the heel of Moshiach*, of this month, of these days, is precisely the dissemination of the wellsprings to the outside.
As a token of esteem, I enclose, in appendix, some notes.
I send you my blessing that for many years to come, you lead your community on the path that leads toward the House of Hashem, in good health, in accordance with the hope and desire of the Alter Rebbe*, influencing its members so that increasingly, they become Chassidim*.
Here are some notes, although, according to the established rule, one does not contradict a commentary.
On Parshas* Chayei Sarah, beginning on page 44, it is stated that women can die in childbirth because the mitzvah* of lighting candles (of Shabbos*) is imperfectly observed. One can explain simply that this precept was given to repair the transgression of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, committed at the instigation of Chavah, who introduced death into the world. Consequently, when the rectification is lacking, it is indeed due to the transgression of the Tree of Knowledge that the punishment is inflicted.
Thus, our Sages say, "The Holy One, blessed be He, forgave idolatry, but not the fact that one turns away from the Torah*, when one does not recite the preliminary blessing." Indeed, when one loses the love of the Torah*, one is effectively punished for the most severe transgressions.
It should also be noted that the Shabbos* lights were one of the points eliciting the opposition of the Karaites and the Samaritans. According to them, the prohibition of lighting fire during Shabbos* also meant that it should not burn during that day (even if it had been lit beforehand). And it is known with what scrupulousness one observes the practices that are not accepted by the Sadducees. On this matter, consult the references given by the Torah Shelemah, Vol. 14, p. 320.
On Parshas* Vayeitzei, beginning on page 65, you speak out against compromises (see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3809), and I commend you for it. There is a terrifying trend in this country and at this time. Not only does one depart from the teaching of our Torah* when it demands the installation of a barrier, but moreover, one aggravates the problem under some pretext or other, seeing in this a partial salvation, even though practice proves that the opposite is true.
Nevertheless, you include in this the practice of placing the chuppah* in the open air, which is done here in a room whose roof is removable. One may question this, for there is no concession involved. Such a practice is, in concrete terms, irreproachable (the same applies to a sukkah*; see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3874).
On Parshas* Vayishlach, beginning on page 67, you report the story of the tzaddik*, Rabbi Michel of Zlotchov. This same story also appears in the Likkutei Dibburim*, Fascicle #15, of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. Nevertheless, he attributes it to Rabbi Meir of Premishlan. But perhaps these are two different stories.
The same applies to the story at the end of page 189. On this, consult the Likkutei Dibburim*, Fascicle #11, regarding the Maggid of Mezeritch*.
The book concludes with a saying of the Tzemach Tzedek* and one can cite, in this regard, that of the Rebbe Rashab*, at the end of his Kuntres Eitz HaChaim*, at the beginning of chapter 31.
