To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs and undertakes a sacred mission,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter and your request for a blessing of Rosh Chodesh* Kislev. I took note therein, with pleasure, of the activities you carried out among your students during the days of Sukkos*. No doubt you do not content yourself with such accomplishments during the month of Tishrei* alone. You also seize the opportunities that present themselves during the eleven other months of the year.

The necessity of such activities is explained elsewhere, and one can verify concretely that they are even more effective among youth when carried out in an indirect manner or, better still, during a gathering or meal, rather than directly. To someone such as yourself, it is surely unnecessary to say more.

You tell me that the number of students is declining because Jews are abandoning this neighborhood (in which the Talmud Torah* of Rav Flyer is located). You do not know what the final outcome will be. Unfortunately, an in-depth analysis is not necessary to determine it. The abandonment of certain neighborhoods is a problem that has arisen, in recent years, in various places, in Chicago and in other cities. And the past gives an indication of what the future will be.

All of this is most regrettable. It seems to me that I drew your attention, three years ago (see Igros Kodesh, Letter #2296), to the absolute necessity of opening a branch of your synagogue and your Talmud Torah* in the new neighborhoods of Chicago, of doing so while there was still time. And what, initially, would have been merely a branch would have developed subsequently, would have constituted a center that would have become a full-fledged institution, near which could have settled all those who were leaving the old neighborhoods and had not yet chosen a final destination.

At every opportunity, I repeated my proposal and repeated it again (see Igros Kodesh, Letter #3839), without taking into account the old saying that one does not fight with ideas. May Hashem grant that at least in the future, you act in this direction, with the greatest eagerness. For however great this eagerness may be, it will never be sufficient, given the needs of the moment and the fundamental importance of this endeavor for dozens of students. Indeed, if a single soul is compared to an entire world, how much more so are many souls.

I enclose our latest publications, which will surely interest you. You will make their content accessible to those around you.

You tell me nothing of your state of health or that of your wife. I deduce from this that all is well.

I send you my blessing on the occasion of the month of deliverance, that of Kislev, which is, in accordance with the saying of the Rebbe Rashab*, the month of our deliverance and the liberation of our souls, when the light and vitality of our souls were granted to us.

במענה על מכתבו פ"נ מר"ח כסלו... נעם לי לקרות במכתבו אודות פעולותיו בתלמידיו במשך ימי הסוכות, ובודאי איננו מסתפק בפעולות כגון דא בחדש תשרי, אלא מחפש גם הזדמנויות במשך שאר י"א חדשי השנה, וההכרח בזה מבואר כנראה במוחש אשר הרבה יותר יש לפעול בהנוער בענינים הנעשים בעקיפין, ומי יאמר מתוך התועדות וסעודה, מאשר בדרכים ישרים, ולדווכתי' האריכות בזה אך למותר.

במ"ש אשר מספר התלמידים-ות הולך ומתמעט מפני שבנ"י מעתיקים דירתם ממחוז זה, ואחרית הדבר מי ישורנו, הנה לצערנו אין נזקקת הראי' בזה להתבוננות יתירה, והרי בעיא זו - העתק הדירות ממחוז למחוז - עומדת זה כמה שנים במקומות שונים, הן בשיקאגא והן בעירם אחרות, והעבר מלמד העתיד.

וחבל אשר עוד מלפני שלש שנים כמדומה העירותי שימת לבו על ההכרח הכי גדול לפתוח סניף מביהכ"נ והת"ת במחוזים החדשים דשיקאגא, ולעשות זה בעוד מועד, ואף ששם סניף יקרא עליו בתחלתו הכוונה הפנימית צריכה להיות שישמש סניף זה גרעין, ומרכז מאתו יצמח מוסד כדבעי ובו וסביבתו יתאספו אלו המעתיקים ממקומות הישנים טרם יוקלטו לסביבה אחרת. ובכל הזדמנות הייתי כופל ושונה בהצעתי זו, ולפעמים מבלי להתחשב בהוראה הנושנה אז מיט א עצה שלאגט מען זיך ניט אן, ויה"ר שעכ"פ עתה יעשו בזה במרץ הכי גדול, ועד כמה של יהי' גדול המרץ עדיין לא יספיק בערך דרישת השעה והחשיבות הנפשית בשביל עשיריות ועשיריות דתלמידים-ות ואם נפש אחת מישראל הרי הוא עולם מלא, עאכו"כ בהנוגע לכמה נפשות.

מוסג"פ מה שהו"ל בזמן האחרון שבטח יעניין את כב' ויזכה בתוכנם גם את סביבתו.

כיון שאינו מזכיר דבר בהנוגע לבריאותו ובריאות זוגתו שיחיו בטח הכל בסדר ובשלום.

בברכת חדש הגאולה הוא חדש כסלו, וכפתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר (מוהרש"ב) נ"ע גם גאולתנו ופדות נפשנו אור וחיות נפשנו ניתן לנו.
