To the distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs, has generous ways, and is of illustrious lineage,

Greetings and blessings,

I was surprised to receive a copy of the document concerning the dining hall of Chabad* Shafrir (the vocational school of Kfar Chabad*), which reports that at the meeting held to determine whether it should be constructed — in the presence of representatives of all the administrations — it was decided, in view of the increase in the cost of building materials and wages in this sector, to set the price at several thousand additional pounds beyond what had been originally planned. Consequently, it was agreed to reduce the size of this building.

First of all, an established principle of Kabbalah* states that contraction engenders severity. In general, my approach is not to reduce, Heaven forbid, but on the contrary, to enlarge.

In my view, it is incumbent upon each person to ensure that the side of good develops, rather than to leave it as it is — and even less to diminish it. Our Sages describe this situation precisely, in the following few words: "One ascends in the domain of holiness."

I am convinced that you will agree with me. There is no reason to reduce a project costing several tens of thousands of pounds because building materials cost a few thousand pounds more.

I know that you took the initiative for the agricultural school of Kfar Chabad*. You have followed this project from its inception and, furthermore, you have invested much energy in the development of the Kfar in general. I believe that the merit of remedying this situation belongs to you. That is why I am addressing you in this letter.

However, if it is truly impossible to increase the loan amount for the agricultural school so that the original plan can be fully implemented, I would be prepared, in the absence of any other solution, to ask the Chassidim* to organize a special fundraising drive — even though, according to the conditions agreed upon, the repayment of Chabad*'s share is not due until later.

The Chassidim* could therefore collect the balance of what will be needed to construct the dining hall, taking into account the increase in raw material costs, in accordance with this letter. I take responsibility for this, and it will be paid, with the help of Hashem, before the end of the construction.

I learned with pleasure from Rav B. E. G. (Rav Binyamin Eliyahu Gorodetski) that you participate in the public class on tractate Bava Metzia. You are surely aware of the instruction I gave at the beginning of the school year in the Yeshivos* Chabad*. I asked that this tractate be studied in the senior classes. That is why we had it printed, with supplements — the commentaries of Rabbi Menachem Mendel, the Tzemach Tzedek*, whose merit protects us, belonging to the revealed dimension of the Torah*, as well as one of his Chassidic discourses* to introduce this tractate and another to conclude it.

I have asked that three copies of this tractate be sent to you in a separate mailing. The first is, of course, for you; the second for the one who leads this study group; and the third for one of its participants. I entrust you with delivering them, hoping that in doing so you will have the opportunity to comment on the fact that "two people seize a garment" (according to the opening words of this tractate) in light of the Chassidic discourse* of the Tzemach Tzedek* found in the appendix. You will find warm words in which to do so. Please excuse me for entrusting you with this task. The supplement, printed separately, has also been sent to you by airmail.

To conclude on a positive note, I will recall that we are approaching Yud-Tes Kislev* — the date of the liberation of the Alter Rebbe*, which the Rebbe Rashab* calls "the day on which our soul was redeemed in peace, on which the light and vitality of our soul were granted to us." When you participate in the Chassidic gathering* at Kfar Chabad* on that day, in accordance with your positive custom of several years, I hope that several of those upon whom you exert influence will accompany you, so that they too may benefit from the light and the luminary that will shine there. Without a doubt, this will have an effect on them, one that will remain engraved in them for days, weeks, and months afterward.

It is stated that one who passes before a shop of spices cannot avoid being permeated by their fragrance. How much more so when it concerns a Chabad* gathering which, as its name indicates, influences profoundly — not only the feeling of the heart but also the intellect of the mind.

I have good hope that they will absorb not only the fragrance but also the inner dimension. The merit of all depends on you.

...להפתעתי קבלתי העתקה... בנידון חדר האוכל בחב"ד שפריר, ותכנו אשר בדיון בענין הקמת חדר האוכל אשר נתקיים בהשתתפות באי כוח המשרדים נקבע אשר לרגלי התיקרות חומרי הבנין ושכר העבודה הבנין צריך לעלות באיזה אלפים לי' יותר מאשר הי' בתכנית, ולכן החליטו להקים בנין מוקטן!

והנה נוסף על הכלל הידוע - בקבלה, אשר צמצום הוא מקור הדינים, הנה בכלל אין עניני להקטין ח"ו, אלא להיפך, להגדיל -

- ולפי השקפתי, הרי זהו גם תפקיד כל אחד להשתדל להגדיל הטוב, ולא להשאירו עומד בעינו ואין צריך לומר להקטינו, וכמו שקלעו לזה רז"ל במתק לשונם במלים אחדות: מעלין בקדש -

ובטוחני אשר גם כ' יסכים לדעתי כי לא יתכן להקטין תכנית שבכללותה עולה לכמה עשיריות אלפים לירות מחמת התיקרות חמרי הבנין וכו' באלפים אחדים.

ובידעי אשר ביה"ס לחקלאות בכפר חב"ד הוא מיזמתו, ואשר כ' טיפח מפעל זה מראשיתו, נוסף על הכוחות הרבים שהשקיע בהתפתחות הכפר בכלל, חושבני שמזכותו הוא שגם ענין זה יבוא על תיקונו על ידו, שלכן הנני כותב לו בזה.

עם כל זה, באם בשום אופן אי אפשר יהי' להגדיל ההלוואה על ביה"ס החקלאי להוציא התכנית לפועל במילואה, הריני מוכן, בלית ברירה, לעורר את אנ"ש שי' לעשות מגבית מיוחדת - אף על פי שלפי תנאי התשלומין מצד חב"ד עוד חזון למועד הפירעון - להרים העודף בעד חדר האוכל שבא מהתיקרות חמרי הבנין כו' בהתאם למכתב הנ"ל, והאחריות עלי, אשר, בעזהשי"ת, יסולק לפני גמר הבנין.

שמחתי להוודע מהרבא"ג שי' שכ' משתתף בשיעור ברבים במס' בבא מציעא, ובטח ידוע לכ' מהוראותי בראשית השנה - לתחילת זמן הלימודים בישיבות חב"ד - שילמדו בכתות הגבוהות מס' בבא מציעא, שלכן ג"כ הדפסנו במיוחד מסכתא זו עם תוספת - חידושים של כ"ק אדמו"ר מנחם מענדל הצמח צדק זצוקלה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע - בנגלה, וגם מאמר שלו להתחל המסכתא ומאמר לסיומה. וצויתי לשלוח לכ' בחבילה בפ"ע ג' טופסים ממסכתא זו. וכמובן אשר הראשונה היא בשביל כ' והשני' בשביל ראש חבורת הלומדים והג' בשביל לומד השיעור. והנני מטריח את כ' במסירתם, כי תקותי כי מתוך כך תהי' לו האפשריות ובודאי האותיות היוצאות מן הלב להסביר להם ענין שנים אוחזין בטלית על פי הנקודות במאמר הצ"צ הנדפס בהוספה. וסליחתו אבקש על הטרחה שבדבר. - ובדואר אויר נשלח לכ' ההוספה שנדפסה ג"כ בפ"ע.

ולסיים בטוב, כיון שמתקרב יום הבהיר י"ט כסלו, יום גאולת רבינו הזקן, ומוסיף בזה כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהרש"ב ביאור "החג אשר פדה בשלום נפשנו ואור וחיות נפשנו ניתן לנו", תקותי אשר כשישתתף בהתועדות בכפר חב"ד ביום סגולה זה, כמנהגו הטוב זה כמה שנים, יצרף אליו כמה וכמה ממושפעיו, בכדי שגם הם יהנו מזיו אור ומאור שבהתועדות זו, בטח תפעל עליהם ותחקוק רושם על הימים שבועות וחדשים שלאחר זה. ואם העובר דרך חנותו של בשם אי אפשר שלא יקלוט ריחו, על אחת כמה וכמה השתתפות בהתועדות חב"דית, שענינה כשמה, היינו שיחדור בפנימיות, ולא רק ברגש הלב אלא שיכבוש גם השכל החב"ד שבמוח, ותקותי חזקה שיקלטו לא רק "ריח" אלא גם ענינים פנימיים, וזכות הרבים תלוי בו.
