To the Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Aryeh (Rav A. Lewin, of Yerushalayim*),
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter from this Monday. You mention a story about medical treatment and the shape of the skull. You are surely alluding to the following story, which was related to me by my father-in-law, the Rebbe [the Frierdiker Rebbe*], whose merit protects us (see Sefer HaMaamarim 5710, p. 140).
One of the members of the family, visibly amazed, addressed the Rebbe Rashab* and told him that he had just read a report of a recent discovery — that of a nerve located in the head. The Rebbe Rashab* replied that this was already discussed in the Chassidic writings of the Mitteler Rebbe*, the son of the Alter Rebbe*, the author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*.
The Rebbe Rashab* produced the manuscript and showed him the text. Then he concluded by emphasizing that the Mitteler Rebbe* did not know of its existence because of medical expertise, but rather because he possessed the perception of the supernal spheres. Indeed, man here below is in the image of the Supernal Man.
One is obligated to express oneself in the words of one's teacher (which explains the following detail, although it is not directly related to the content of this story). My father-in-law, the Rebbe, added that this family member made his remark while the Rebbe Rashab* was drying his hands after washing them for the meal. In general, the Rebbe Rashab* was not pleased when someone addressed him at such a moment (for then it is not appropriate to interrupt). He therefore merely looked at the one speaking to him. He responded to him only after reciting the blessing of HaMotzi (over the bread, to begin the meal).
A teaching follows from this — the necessity of concentrating not only when reciting the blessing over the washing (of the hands before the meal) but also while drying. From this standpoint, someone's speech causes a disturbance.
I enclose the Kovetz Lubavitch*, recently published. It will surely interest you, and you will make its content accessible to the broadest public. The merit of the public depends on you.
With my blessing,
