1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Kislev 5716

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am surprised not to have heard from you since your letter from before Rosh Hashanah*. How did you make use of Tishrei* — a month of comprehensive scope for the entire year, satiated with all the good, which one must then draw into the other months? You will no doubt inform me at the next opportunity.

In your letter, you mention a detailed program of study in the revealed dimension of the Torah* and in Chassidus*. In general, one must combine in-depth study with more rapid study that enables one to accumulate knowledge. This latter study should cover, for the revealed dimension of the Torah*: the weekly Parshah*, a Talmudic tractate chosen during its annual distribution (generally done on Yud-Tes Kislev*), and the laws necessary for daily life. For Chassidus*: the second (rapid) study should cover the weekly Parshah* — the Torah Or* in winter, the Likkutei Torah* in spring and summer — or the pamphlets that are published at regular intervals.

The in-depth study, for both the revealed Torah* and Chassidus*, should focus on whatever you wish, in accordance with the statement of our Sages ("A person should always study what his heart desires"). As for the practical details — the time to devote to it each day and when to do so — it is clear that each person is different. You should therefore consult your friends among the Chassidim* who are on the spot.

You ask me what your occupation should be. It is obvious that if Hashem has granted you abilities in the domain of education and of influencing others, you must make use of this gift. To do so in the best possible manner, it would be good for you to also earn your livelihood in this way (by being a teacher).

The benefit to the person one guides is the same whether one acts for the Name of Hashem or to earn one's livelihood. Our Sages say in the Sifri (Teitzei 24:19) that "if one loses a coin and it is found by a poor person, one has indeed fulfilled the mitzvah* of tzedakah*."

Needless to say, all of this is in addition to the three daily studies that concern everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe [the Frierdiker Rebbe*], whose merit protects us. These pertain to Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known. You surely observe them.

With my blessing to share good tidings of all this,
