1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Kislev 5716

Brooklyn

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Mr. A. Friedrich,

Greetings and blessings,

I am surprised not to have heard from you for a long time. According to established custom, this is no doubt proof that all is well and that you therefore have nothing to write. Nevertheless, this is so only regarding your personal concerns. When it comes to communal matters, on the other hand, our Sages say that "one ascends in the domain of holiness." One therefore always has something to write about regarding new activities.

Moreover, the new year has just begun and it is necessary, once again, to organize the times of study. The one to whom Hashem grants the capacity to guide others must therefore see in this his highest, most essential, and most profound objective.

I would like, in particular, to ask you to strengthen and develop the classes you give to women. Through them, one can reach the entire family, leading it to improve its Jewish commitment in general, and the education of the children — boys and girls — in particular.

Indeed, even if the children conduct themselves in accordance with the Torah*, they very often lack the knowledge of many laws and customs. And the mothers are unable to answer various questions that their children pose to them — prompted by their friends or by other circumstances.

Our Sages also say that one encourages eagerness only in those who possess this quality by nature. I therefore hope that I will receive good tidings from you in this domain and in others. Without a doubt, Hashem will grant you His recompense, "measure for measure" but in a greatly increased manner, through an addition to "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," as well as to the luminary of the Torah*, which is its inner dimension, for your own family and for yourself.

In expectation of your good tidings,
