To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter, informing me of the improvement in your state of health. May Hashem grant that you continue to improve.

I am surprised that you do not specify whether the reports and the words that were surely conveyed by the guests (who spent the month of Tishrei* with the Rebbe), upon their return to the Holy Land, were of any use. It has been explained many times at Chassidic gatherings*, including the Shabbos* that blessed this month, that unnecessary words are not necessarily those spoken in vain, but also those spoken with a specific purpose that fail to achieve it and thus, in fact, turn out to be unnecessary.

The purpose of a Chassidic gathering* and of words of encouragement is that they produce a concrete benefit — and not merely that one feel satisfaction at the moment they are spoken, finding the explanations pleasant. May Hashem grant that I have the merit and success of receiving good tidings in this regard.

To conclude on a positive note: you inform me that your grandson, Aharon Menachem (Rav A. M. Segal), may Hashem grant him long life, entered the cheder* on the eve of Shabbos Bereishis*. May Hashem grant that from the age of five, when one begins the study of the Written Torah*, he attain the age of ten and accede to the Mishnah*, then at thirteen be obligated in the observance of mitzvos*, as the Mishnah* states.

You also tell me that on 2 Marcheshvan, your grandson Yosef Simchah (Rav Y. S. Ginsburg), may Hashem grant him long life, also entered the cheder*. May Hashem grant that he grow up to be a Chassid*, fearing Hashem and a Torah* scholar.

You and your wife will derive much Chassidic satisfaction from your sons, your sons-in-law, and all your descendants.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מודיע מהטבת הבריאות, ויה"ר שילך מטוב ליותר טוב.

לפלא שאינו כותב בפרטיות אם פעלו באיזה כיוון שהוא, הפ"ש והדבורים שבטח מסרו האורחים דאה"ק ת"ו בחזירתם. וכמדובר בהתועדות כ"פ וגם בש"ק מברכין זה העבר, אשר דברים בטלים אין פירושם דוקא כשמדברים ע"ד ענינים בטלים, אלא גם כפשוטו שאם מדברים לאיזה כוונה ותכלית, ואין הכוונה והתכלית באים לפועל, במילא נעשים הדברים דברים בטלים, והרי הכוונה והתכלית בהתועדות ודברי התעוררות שהם יביאו לאיזה בכן ובמעשה בפועל ולא רק לנחת רוח בעת שמיעת הדברים, אז עס געפעלט דער ווארט. ויה"ר שאזכה ואצליח לקבל בשו"ט בזה.

ומסיימים בטוב בבשורתו הטובה אשר עש"ק בראשית הכניסו את נכדו אהרן מנחם שליט"א לחדר, ויה"ר שמבן חמש למקרא יגדל לבן עשר למשנה ולבן י"ג למצות וכו' וכפסק המשנה.

ולבשורתו הטובה אשר ביום ב' מ"ח הכניסו את נכדו יוסף שמחה שליט"א לחדר, הנה יה"ר שיגדל להיות חסיד ירא שמים ולמדן.

והוא וזוגתו שיחיו ירוו מבניהם וחתניהם ומכל יו"ח שיחיו רוב נחת חסידותי.
