To Mr. Michel Yehoshua (Mr. M. Y. Shulsinger),

Greetings and blessings,

I learned with pleasure that your son Amiel will become Bar Mitzvah* on the Thursday of Parshas Vayeira*. I extend all my wishes to you and your wife, that he always be conscious that his Bar Mitzvah* is the beginning of his submission to the Torah* and the mitzvos*, and that he ascend from one level to the next in the study of Torah* and the practice of mitzvos*, each day.

You will surely be called to the Torah* this Shabbos Parshas Vayeira*, and you will recite the blessing "Baruch ShePetarani" (traditionally recited by the father of the Bar Mitzvah*). Now, this Parshah* is the source of a teaching of our Sages in Midrash Rabbah*, chapter 53, paragraph 10, regarding the Bar Mitzvah* of our father Yitzchak — the first that was ever celebrated — which delivers a teaching for all generations, as does everything that belongs to the Torah*, which shares the same etymology as hora'ah (teaching).

Our Sages relate that the great men of the nations participated in the feast of Yitzchak's Bar Mitzvah*. Among them was Og, who mocked the Bar Mitzvah* boy and the future of Yisrael — an insignificant minority among numerous nations. The Holy One, blessed be He, then said to him: "I swear that you will see thousands, millions of his descendants."

There have always been, and there still are, people who claim that a life based on the Torah* diminishes and weakens Yisrael. But our Sages have emphasized that, on the contrary, the Torah* is the path of life and eternity, of material and spiritual success.

שלום וברכה!

בנועם קבלתי הידיעה אשר בנו עמיאל שי' יכנס לעול מצוות ביום ה' פ' וירא, ומביע הנני בזה איחולי לו ולזוגתו שיחיו, אשר בנם שי' יכיר תמיד כי יום הב"מ שלו הרי הוא התחלת קבלתו עול תורה ועול מצוות, וילך מחיל אל חיל בלימוד התורה וקיום מצותי' בחיי היום-יום.

כיון שכ' בטח יעלה לתורה בש"ק פ' וירא הבע"ל, ויאמר ברוך שפטרני, הרי בפרשה זו המקור למשרז"ל (מד"ר פנ"ג, י) ע"ד הב"מ של יצחק אבינו, חגיגת הב"מ הראשונה ושיש בה הוראה לדורות, ככל ענין שבתורה מל' הוראה. וסיפרו רז"ל שבמשתה הב"מ של יצחק נוכחו גדולי האומות ועוג ביניהם, שהי' לועג לב"מ ולעתידם של ישראל, מיעוט קטן בקרב עמים רבים, ואמר לו הקב"ה חייך שאתה רואה אלף אלפים ורבוא רבבות יוצאים מבני בניו.

וכן היו תמיד כאלה שטענו וטוענים שדרך החיים על פי תורה יש בה כדי לחסל ולהתיש כוחם של ישראל וכו', והורו רז"ל אשר אדרבה דרך התורה היא דרך החיים והנצחיות, דרך ההצלחה הן ברוחניות והן בגשמיות.
