Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 7 Cheshvan, in which you describe the positive activities of the students of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, who give classes in Chassidus* and disseminate the mitzvos* specific to each period — for example, that of the four species*.

May Hashem grant that the statement of the Alter Rebbe* be fulfilled in each of them — his commentary on the verse "Tzedakah* elevates a nation" — according to which "one's mind and heart become a thousand times more refined," as explained at the beginning of the Torah Or* and in the Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos*.

You write to me that you must devote to all of this time that you could have reserved for your personal study. You also mention the proposal made to you to participate in the education of the younger classes of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. There is no need to explain at length how important all of this is.

Nevertheless, it is clear that a student of the Yeshivah* must study Torah* with ardor and constancy. Both of these pursuits are, in this case, positive. How much time to devote to each? From this standpoint, everything depends on the period and the individuals. You should therefore consult your teacher and the dean of the Yeshivah*.

May Hashem grant that you give Him your heart, for it is in this way that you will achieve success in both domains at once.

You tell me that certain young men refuse to go and repeat Chassidic commentaries. I am astonished and surprised that students of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* could lack motivation in this domain. This goes against the will of our holy master, and by acting in this manner, one deprives oneself far more than one deprives others.

All must therefore come together and make good resolutions in this domain. In this way, these resolutions will be lasting, as the Chassidic discourse* entitled "Enlist for Yourselves" explains.

May Hashem grant that you share good tidings of all this.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מז' חשון, בו כותב אודות הפעולות הטובות דתלמידי תו"ת - בחזרת דא"ח ומצוה בזמנה בענין הד' מינים וכו', ויה"ר שיקוים בכאו"א מהם מאמר רבנו הזקן על הכתוב וצדקה תרומם גוי, שנעשים מוחו ולבו זכים אלף פעמים ככה, וכמבואר בתו"א בתחלתו ובלקו"ת לג' פרשיות בהגהה שם.

במ"ש שהענינים הנ"ל צריך להקדיש בשבילם גם זמן שהי' יכול לנצל בלימוד לעצמו, וכן ע"ד הצעת הישיבה לקחת חלק בחינוך תלמידי כתות הצעירות בישיבת תו"ת, הנה גודל ענינים לו אין צריכים ביאור ואריכות, לאידך גיסא, מובן ג"כ שעל תלמיד הישיבה ללמוד בהתמדה ושקידה, ושני העסקים כאחד טובים, וכמה זמן להקדיש לכל אחד מהם, אין כל הזמנים והאישים שוים ובכן עליהם להתייעץ וביחד עם הר"מ והר"י, ויה"ר מהשי"ת שיכוין אל לבם לשמים שאז יצליחו בשני הענינים גם יחד.

מ"ש שישנם אברכים כאלה שאין רוצים ללכת לחזור דא"ח - הנה פליאה ותמי' על תלמידי ישיבת תו"ת העדר רצון בזה, שהוא היפך רצון נשיאינו הק', ומזה מובן שע"י העדר רצון זה מחסר בעניני עצמן יותר מבעניני המושפעים. וצריכים היו להתאסף ביחד ולקבל החלטות טובות בזה,שאז בטח יהי' להם קיום וע"פ המבואר בד"ה החלצו.

והשי"ת יזכהו לבשר טוב בכל האמור לעיל.
