Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 2 Cheshvan, with the request for a blessing that was enclosed. In accordance with your request, it will be read at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe [the Frierdiker Rebbe*], whose merit protects us. It is stated that all Jews bear collective responsibility, and to this is added familial closeness. The more ardently and eagerly you study, the more fervently you pray, the more you fulfill the mitzvos* in the best possible manner, the more you will receive the blessings of Hashem that you request in this letter. May Hashem grant that you know success and share good tidings in this regard.

I have just received your letter of 16 Marcheshvan, with the four requests for blessings, which will be read at a propitious moment at the holy resting place. You also inform me of your state of mind. Now, a clear explanation has already been given on this subject in the Tanya*, beginning with chapter 27.

And one can observe concretely that every thought one may have about one's own person leads to neglecting the study of Torah* and suggests the senseless idea of leaving the Yeshivah*. One must conclude from this that these thoughts emanate from the evil inclination, whose objective is to fight against the material and spiritual well-being of a person by explaining to him that it is rationally impossible.

Such thoughts exist only because "Hashem is testing you." If one strengthens oneself to overcome the test, one can see for oneself how senseless they are.

Therefore, forget all these thoughts — without even entering into discussion with them — but solely by pushing them away with a luminous idea. Indeed, a little light suffices to dispel a great deal of darkness.

You should ask your teacher and the dean of the Yeshivah* to organize your studies in the appropriate manner, and you should follow their instructions. May Hashem grant you success.

נתקבל מכתבו מב' חשון עם הפ"נ המוסגרים בו, וכבקשתו יקראו בעת רצון על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע. וכיוון שכל ישראל ערבים זה בזה, ונוספה על זה גם השייכות המשפחתית, הנה ככל שיוסיף הוא בלימוד בהתמדה ובשקידה בעבודת התפלה ובקוים המצות בהידור, יתוסף בברכת השי"ת בענינים אודותם כותב בהפ"נ הנ"ל, ויזכהו השי"ת ויצליחו לבשר טוב בזה...

זה עתה נתקבל מכתבו מט"ז מ"ח עם ד' פ"נ שיקראו בעת רצון על הציון הק'. ומה שכותב במכתבו ע"ד מצב רוחו - כבר מילתו אמורה, ובביאור, בתניא קדישא פכ"ו כ"ז ואילך. והרי רואה במוחש, אשר מחשבותיו ע"ד עצמו מביאות אותו לביטול תורה ולקס"ד מופרך שיעזוב את הישיבה, שמזה ברור אשר מיצה"ר באות מחשבות אלו, אשר כל ענינו להלחם נגד אשרו של האדם הרוחני והגשמי בהסברות שאין להם יסוד בשכל הבריא, וכל מציאותן הוא כי מנסה הוי' אתכם וגו', וכשמתאמץ ועומד בנסיון - רואה גם האדם עצמו איך שבטלה כל מציאותן המדומה. - ויסיח דעתו מכל מח' אלו - (מבלי להכנס אפילו בשקו"ט עד"ז, כ"א ע"י מח' אור, שאפילו מעט אור דוחה הרבה חשך) - ויבקש את הר"מ ור"י שלו לסדר לימודיו כדבעי וכהוראתם יעשה, והשי"ת יצליחו.
