To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Yisrael Tzvi HaLevi (Rav I. T. Heber, of Tel Aviv),

Greetings and blessings,

In the letter you wrote me some time ago, you describe your activity during your miluim* (army reserve duty). I was pleased by it. You conclude by telling me that, in accordance with my request, you wrote to Eilat, but did not receive a response. It is quite clear that this does not exempt you from continuing the effort. One must write and write again, sending there the appropriate publications to awaken the point of Yiddishkeit*, to express it in an effective and profound manner, as Chassidus* explains.

You ask me what to answer those who claim that science is capable of demonstrating that the world has existed for more than 5,715 years, and whether the explanation can be found in the well-known statement of our Sages that "the Holy One, blessed be He, created worlds and destroyed them." This is not the way to interpret this teaching of our Sages. Indeed, they allude here to spiritual worlds, as the Alter Rebbe* explains, based on the writings of the Arizal*, in the Torah Or*, Parshas Shemos*, page 51d.

It is said that science is capable of proving all this. This is a blatant falsehood. There is not the slightest scientific demonstration in this matter, but only hypotheses built on exceedingly fragile foundations. It is difficult to explain this in a letter with the elaboration that would be appropriate. Nevertheless, the general idea is as follows. Everything that scientific works say on this subject — about the existence of the world for several billion years — is based on the following hypothesis:

Under the conditions of temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind direction that prevail at the present time, as well as according to the elements that currently constitute matter, one can evaluate the number of years necessary for sand to accumulate to a height of one hundred cubits at the seashore. Indeed, this sand comes from mountains whose height is known. And if one assumes that this same sand, found near rivers, is the origin of the formation of the mountains — if one further assumes that all these conditions have not changed over all these thousands of years — one can calculate the age of the earth, which is indeed far greater than 5,715 years.

On the other hand, if one asks (these scientists) how the grains of sand were formed, the scientists have no answer. If one tells them that, just as grains of sand formed in the plain, the mountains could also have been shaped all at once, they do not know how to respond either. If one asks them further how one can be certain that several thousands of years ago, the conditions regarding water, winds, and rivers were the same as those currently known, they still cannot answer.

And one can pose the following additional question. If one assumes that the proof they advance has indeed a scientific character, how does one explain that the dating of the world as established by astronomy, by archaeology, by geology, and by the study of radiation contradict one another in so radical a manner? Indeed, according to one, the earth cannot be more than half a billion years old, while according to another, it is no less than two billion years old.

All these contradictions clearly prove that these investigations are nothing more than hypotheses without foundation (literally, "built on air"). We will not develop this analysis further here.

The month of Tishrei* has a comprehensive scope that infuses motivation and joy for the entire year. You have therefore surely made use of it to exercise an influence on those around you. You will share all of this with me at the next opportunity.

נהניתי ממ"ש במכתבו מכבר אודות התעמולה בעת היותו במילואים, ומובן שמה שמסיים שבהתאם להתעוררות שלי כתב לאילת ולא קיבל מענה, שאין זה פוטרו כלל מהמשך בזה, וצריך לכתוב ולחזור ולכתוב ולשלוח לשם גם מעניני דפוס המתאימים, ובלבד לעורר בהם נקודת היהדות ולהוציאה אל הגילוי בפועל ובפנימיות, וכמבואר בדא"ח.

בשאלתו מה יענה כשאומרים לו שהמדע כביכול, יש לו הוכחות שהעולם קיים יותר מה'תשט"ו שנה, ואם יש לתרץ זה במרז"ל הידוע שהקב"ה הי' בונה עולמות ומחריבן. - פירוש מרז"ל זה אינו כן, כי הכוונה לעולמות רוחניים, וכמ"ש רבנו הזקן מכתבי האריז"ל בתורה אור פ' שמות (דף נ"א ע"ד). ומה שאומרים שהמדע יש לו הוכחות על הנ"ל, הנה זהו שקר מוחלט, כי אין להמדע כל הוכחה בזה, כי אם השערה בנוי' על יסודות רעועים . וקשה לבאר זה במכתב באריכות הדרושה, והנקודה בזה היא, שהנמצא בספרי לימוד המדע ע"ד הנ"ל, ע"ד קיום העולם כמה אלפים מיליונים שנה וכו' מבססים הם השערה זו כדלהלן:

כיון ש(בתנאים הקיימים היום , חום ולחץ האויר, תנועת הרוחות, כמות החמרים השונים הנמצאים על פני האדמה וכו' וכו', הנה) דרוש לכל מאה אמה גובה דהחול המתקבץ על שפת הנהר, מספר מסוים של שנים, וכיון שנמצאים הרים מחול זה עצמו שהם בגובה כמה מילים, הנה( את " ל שגם הם נקבצו מגרגירי חול ועל יד נהר כגון זה, והתנאים הנ"ל לא נשתנו במשך כל האלפי שנים, הרי) צריך לזה כך וכך שנים, וחשבון זה מגיע הרבה יותר מן ה'תשט"ו.

אבל כששואלים אצלם, מאין נתהוו גרגירי החול, אין בידם לענות, וכששואלים אצלם - כמו שאצ"ל נתהוו גרגירי חול במישור הרי אפשר לומר שנתהוו ההרים בבת אחת, ג"כ אין בידם לענות על זה. וכששואלים אצלם מנין להם שלפני חמשה אלפים שנה היו כל התנאים, דהמים והרוחות והנהר וכו' ממש כמו שהם עכשיו, הרי גם על זה אין בפיהם מענה. וכששואלים אותם נוסף על זה, את"ל שהוכחה שלהם מדעית, הרי איך אפשר שתוצאות החקירה דמשך קיום העולם ע"פ המדע דתכונה, ע"פ המדע של חקר עתיקות (ארכעלאגיע), ע"פ המדע דחקר מבנה כדור הארץ (געאלאגיע) וע"פ המדע דראדיא - סותרות אחת לרעותה ומן הקצה אל הקצה , היינו - ולדוגמא - מסקנא אחת שאי אפשר להיות יותר מחצי ביליון שנה ומסקנא שני' שאי אפשר - פחות משני ביליון שנה, וכיו"ב?

והרי סתירות אלו - הוכחה ברורה הן שאין כל חקירות אלו אלא השערות בנויות באויר. ואכמ"ל.

בטח ניצל ימי חדש תשרי הוא חדש הכללי שממנו ממשיכים ההתעוררות והשמחה על כל השנה - להשפעה בסביבתו, ויכתוב עד"ז בהזדמנות הבאה.
