To the Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Moshe Pinchas HaKohen (Rav M. P. Katz, of New York),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you relate to me the Chassidic gathering* that took place at the conclusion of Shabbos Parshas Noach*.

In general, I was pleased by it, and I thank the organizers, the leaders, and the participants, together with all the members of their families. May each one receive a blessing.

Nevertheless, I am surprised and astonished by certain Chassidim* who do not take into account the well-known statement and promise that "when your wellsprings will spread forth…" (Moshiach* will come). Now, when can one speak of spreading? When one sees new faces at the gatherings and assemblies of the Chassidim*. If one judges by the results in the current state of affairs, nothing is being done in this regard. Until when will this continue?

Needless to say, my purpose is not to complain about the past, but to emphasize what should be done in the future for the Chassidic gatherings* of Melaveh Malkah* (at the conclusion of Shabbos*) or of the Shabbos* that blesses the month (the last Shabbos* of the month — such a gathering being organized in accordance with the custom instituted by the Frierdiker Rebbe*).

In accordance with the well-known saying of the Chassid*, the tzaddik*, Rabbi Hillel of Paritch*, one must, through each of one's actions, have the intention of strengthening Chassidus*.

You yourself and your friends — all the Chassidim* who have begun to organize these Chassidic gatherings* — will continue to do so and will multiply them.

Thus, we will witness the conclusion, very soon and in our days, through our righteous Moshiach*, and the promise will be fulfilled that "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem."

For one sanctifies the vessels of Divine service when they are full (Zevachim 88a), or at least when one has the intention of filling them (Menachos 8a). And they are considered full so long as something remains in them (Menachos 88a).

To the holiness of these vessels (Tosefta, Taharos, ch. 1:4) — a complete holiness (cf. Rambam*, Laws of Disqualified Offerings, ch. 3:20) — is added the intrinsic holiness of the lights.

Such is precisely the purpose — the perfection of creation — as various texts of Chassidus* establish.

With my blessing to share good tidings of all this,
