Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the end of Tishrei*, in which you indicate how you will be able to continue studying Chassidus* and adopting its practices and customs. You say that all of this must not become too widely known. Likewise, you will not be able to consult the books of Chassidus* for more than an hour or two each day.

Concerning the first point, it is for you personally to make this decision — to determine how you will progress in the best way in the fear of Hashem and in Chassidus*. You will adopt the conduct that follows from this. Regarding the second point, however, you are limiting the time you will devote to the study of the words of the living Elokim — that is, to the inner dimension of the Torah*. And even though it is certain that what you will learn is always better than nothing, an approach to the holy Torah* of Hashem that has the effect of reducing the study of one of its aspects is a deficiency in the respect due to it, Heaven forbid.

Admittedly, it is not obligatory for everyone to study Chassidus* for several hours each day, in accordance with the well-known statement of our Sages regarding the Torah* in its entirety. Indeed, those who cannot do otherwise fulfill their obligation with one chapter in the morning and another in the evening. Nevertheless, they must know that this is so only because Divine Providence has made it that they cannot do otherwise — that they do not have the merit of devoting more time to the wisdom of Hashem. But Heaven forbid that they should see this as a normal situation and a definitive arrangement.

It is surely unnecessary to say more, so self-evident is this. And you also know what is said in the Kuntres Etz HaChaim* of the Rebbe Rashab*, which emphasizes that in the present era, the war waged by the evil inclination concerns primarily the study of the inner dimension of the Torah*, which is revealed in our times through the teaching of Chassidus*.

With my blessing to share good tidings of all this,
