Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Tishrei and to the points in your letter of 20 Elul that I had not yet addressed. Certainly, joy fills a part of my heart on account of the activities you describe to me. However, you yourself emphasize in your letter that these are insignificant compared to the potential and the opportunities that presently exist in the world, particularly in the Holy Land.

Had we merited it, we would have derived this lesson from the domain of holiness. But in the current situation, one must observe, in this regard, what takes place on "the other side" — that is, among the men and parties of the left. These achieve success because they adopt behaviors and act with the very strengths that Chassidus* advocates for the domain of holiness.

I allude in particular to enthusiasm, eagerness, acting without being preoccupied with one's own rationality, obedience to the instructions one receives from one's superior — inquiring about their explanation only afterward — unity within a single organization to achieve the assigned objectives, and renouncing one's personal interest and concern, including those one considers spiritual, for the good of all.

If, on their part, these men have achieved all this — even though it is merely a borrowed attitude on their part and, ultimately, they will return to their source, that of life and enthusiasm — how much more must it be so for us, particularly within the community of Chassidim*, whose masters, on high, continue to serve the Jewish people as they did before. These masters reveal, here below, increased blessing and success in all the institutions, all the endeavors, and among all those who devote themselves to them.

But, to our misfortune and our sorrow, this success and this blessing are not utilized except from time to time and in the most limited proportion. And one is not even motivated by reasons that one considers important, at least according to human logic. In fact, one adopts this attitude because one occupies oneself with what is no more than a dish of lentils (what is merely secondary), and one thereby forgets what holds the birthright (what is truly essential). Sometimes, one does so because of dissension, which leads to saying: "It shall be neither yours nor mine." Meanwhile, a day dawns and then passes (time is lost).

And there is proof that all of this is true. Indeed, in every place where one has, at least, moved one's little finger — according to the expression of the Midrash*, at the beginning of Koheles Rabbah* — one has been able to observe considerable success, far beyond what was expected. In many cases, the words of the verse have also been fulfilled: "When Hashem is pleased with a man's ways, even his enemies come to his aid."

Needless to say, this is not addressed to you personally, but to all Chassidim*. Likewise, I do not seek to moralize or to complain about the past. On the contrary, I express my hope that perhaps, by virtue of these words, one will devote oneself to one's mission in the appropriate manner. Then you will be able to advance, to conquer, to lead tens, hundreds, thousands of Jews toward the teaching of Chassidus*, its practices and its customs. And "the humble one shall become a thousand."

You have surely already received the letter from the secretariat concerning the branch for women and girls of Chabad* in Bnei Brak.

I am surprised that you do not speak of a campaign to distribute the four species* (during the festival of Sukkos*), comparable to the one that is conducted here, and which, it seems, was also carried out last year by the youth of the Chabad* association in the Holy Land. This consists of asking passersby in the street to recite a blessing over these four species*.

This year, the campaign was expanded here to convalescent homes, and it met with great success. Perhaps you will complete all of this at the next opportunity.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ה תשרי (וגם על מה שלא עניתי עד עתה במכתבו מכ' אלול), אף שחדוה תקיעא בליבאי מסטרא דא בסיבת הפעולות שכותב אודותם, אבל (ואפילו במכתבו עצמו כותב, ש)אינם בערך כלל וכלל להיכולת והאפשריות שישנם עתה בעולם וביחוד באה"ק ת"ו.

ואילו זכינו היינו למדים זה מסטרא דקדושה, ובמצב הנוכחי יש להווכח בה מהנעשה בלעו"ז, היינו באישים ובמפלגות השמאליות, אשר ההצלחה שלהם היא מפני שאוחזים בדרכים ופועלים בכחות שתורת החסידות דורשת אותם בעבודה דקדושה, והוא - החיות, ההתלהבות, פעולות מבלי להתחשב עם הטעם ודעת דעצמו, משמעת לפקודות של הנמצא למעלה הימנו (ורק לאחר כך להתבונן לטעמיו), התאחדות באגודה אחת להגשמת הפעולות הנדרשות, וויתור על רווחי ועניני הפרט ואפילו הרוחנים לפי דעתם בשביל תועלת הכלל כו' וכו'.

ואם בענינים שלהם הגיעו לידי כך, אף ששאול הוא אצלם וסו"ס, יחזרו למקורם מקור החיים והחיות, עאכו"כ בעניננו, וביחוד במחנה החסידים, אשר הנשיאים "מה עד כאן עומד ומשמש אף עתה עומד ומשמש" במרום וממשיכים תוספת ברכה והצלחה למטה בכל המוסדות והפעולות והמתעסקים בזה. אלא שלדאבוננו ולצערנו, אין מנצלים הברכה וההצלחה כי אם לעתים ולפרקים ובמדה קטנה באין ערוך, ולא מפני סיבות חשובות עכ"פ בעיני שכל האנושי, אלא - או מפני ששקועים בענינים דבערך דנזיד עדשים ושוכחים על הבכורה, או מפני ענינים של פירוד לבבות, וע"פ הסיסמא גם לי גם לך לא יהי'. ובינתים יום נכנס יום יוצא כו' וכו', וההוכחה על אמיתת כל הנ"ל הוא - שבכל מקום שעשו עכ"פ באצבע קטנה (ע"פ לשון המדרש קה"ר בתחלתו) נראית הצלחה מופלגה שלא שיערוה מראש, עד שנתקיים, במקרים רבים גם מ"ש ברצות ד' דרכי איש גם אויביו ישלים עמו.

- מובן שאין כוונתי בזה - רק אליו בפרט, אלא לכללות אנ"ש... וגם אין כוונתי להטפת מוסר וצעקה על העבר, כ"א בתקוה, אשר כולי האי ואולי יעוררו דברי אלה שיתמסרו להעבודה כדבעי, אשר אז הלוך ילכו ויבקשו וירכשו עשיריות מאות ואלפים ורבבות מבני ישראל - אל תורת החסידות הדרכותי' ומנהגי', עד שהקטן יהי' לאלף וגו'.

בטח כבר נתקבל מכתב המזכירות בהנוגע לסניף אגודת נשי ובנות חב"ד בבני ברק.

לפלא שאינו מזכיר ע"ד "פעולות ד' מינים", כוונתי למה שנהגו כאן, וכמדומה גם ע"י צעירי אגו"ח באה"ק ת"ו אשתקד - להזמין העוברים ברחוב וכיו"ב לברך על ד' המינים, ובשנה זו הוסיפו כאן בעיקר ביקור בבתי הבראה וכיו"ב והי' בהצלחה רבה, ואולי ימלא בהזדמנות הבאה.
