Igrot Kodesh · Letter 383 — Talmudic Linguistics and Prophetic Vision
Volume 2 · Letter 218
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Tammuz 5708,
To my close relative, the dear Dr. A. Hillman,
I greet and bless you,
I received your letter of 7 Iyar, which reached me by regular post. I was pleased to learn that you are well, as are all the members of your family.
In the meantime, you have surely received the letter I wrote you before Pesach*, in which I informed you that the journal Sinai* reached me and I thanked you for it.
I will make several remarks on your letter, following the points in order:
1. You observe that the term designating vision is ordinarily Chazeyi* in the Bavli* and Chamei* in the Yerushalmi*. This is indeed what the Erchei HaMidrash* of Bacher and the Aruch HaShalem* say, at the end of page 48c, giving several examples in this regard. But in my humble opinion the difference is far more fundamental, for Chazeyi has the same etymology as Machazeh*, vision. The Likkutei Torah* touches on this point as well.
2. You note that the term Haggadah* means 'to say,' as in the verse 've-higadta levincha*' ['and you shall tell your son']. I specified in my commentary on the Haggadah that this explanation is given by the Abudraham*.
Indeed, if Haggadah shel Pesach is taken in the sense of Midrash* of Pesach, only a portion of the text justifies such a designation, from 'we were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt' until 'and we shall say before Him Hallelukah.' This is not the meaning indicated by the Talmud* and the early authorities.
3. You say that the names of the Seder* steps form an acrostic. And it appears that you find in this a support for retaining the word Rochatz*. It seems to me more logical in such a case to retain Rachatz, which allows Birkat HaMazon* and Nirtzah* to be introduced into the acrostic:
Kadesh* Urchatz* Maror* Korech*
Karpas* Yachatz* Shulchan Orech*
Maggid* Rachatz Tzafun* Birkat HaMazon
Motzi* Matzah* Hallel* Nirtzah
4. You observe that the verses concerning the wise and the simple son are expressed in the singular, whereas that concerning the wicked son is in the plural.
Perhaps the following reason may be offered. It is possible to classify within the category of the wicked son persons of very different views — a wise man, a simple man, someone who does not know how to ask a question — all sharing their wicked character and therefore asking the same question: 'What is this labor that you impose upon yourselves?'
One can verify in practice that those who most forcefully pose such challenges are generally persons who do not know how to ask a question.
Nevertheless, this should result in citing the wicked son last, and one may wonder about this.
Rav Chadakov* suggested the reason for this difference. Indeed, the wicked, when they ask a question, disrupt the established order and have no organization, as Rashi* emphasizes in his commentary on the verse Devarim 1:22. Consequently each one distinguishes himself from the other, as Rashi says in his commentary on the verse Bereishit 46:27.
* * *
At the end of your letter you question the explanation of the Levush*, according to which one does not say in the Yom Tov* prayer Beahavah mikra kodesh* ['a holy convocation, with love']. For the laws of the festival were transmitted when Hashem 'placed the mountain over their heads.' You therefore ask:
A) Why do we say in the Yom Tov prayer 'You gave us this festival, Hashem our Hashem, with love'?
The distinction seems quite simple to me. Here the expression 'with love' relates to what is said before it, 'You gave us' — You, Hashem. In contrast, the holy convocation is observed by the children of Israel with their own love.
B) It is said that Hashem 'placed the mountain over their heads,' and our Sages conclude in tractate Shabbat 88a that the Torah* was given under compulsion. How then could the children of Israel have said 'we will do and then we will understand'? For the verse 'They accepted His kingship willingly' refers to the crossing of the Sea of Reeds* and not to the acceptance of the Torah and mitzvot*.
Here is the deeper meaning of this explanation. It is conceivable that a person would not accept the Torah and mitzvot as long as he has not understood and felt that they represent the most perfect form of good, and that withdrawing from them leads to sinking into evil. The more one becomes conscious of all this, the less likely it becomes to reject the Torah.
Now, at the time of the giving of the Torah, only fifty days had elapsed since the departure from Egypt — an abomination of the land, with its corrupted behaviors. The children of Israel were therefore not in a position to transform their existence from one extreme to the other, relative to the situation they were leaving, and to internalize this awareness.
This is why Hashem 'placed the mountain over their heads' and suggested this awareness by revealing truth, so that they perceived, through their senses, the perfection — including the material perfection — of the Torah and mitzvot, without which their lives had no meaning even in their physical dimension. They therefore said, with the utmost sincerity, 'we will do and we will understand.'
However, they did not arrive at this awareness through their own effort and successive progress, but rather through a gift, a flash from heaven. Only a hidden trace therefore remained after the giving of the Torah. Subsequently they fulfilled the Torah indeed under compulsion, for this observance imposed upon them an intense and arduous effort.
In other words, the divine revelation caused that at the time of the giving of the Torah each Jew was close to prophecy, or even a genuine prophet, as the Zohar*, the Moreh Nevuchim*, the Abravanel*, the Avodat HaKodesh*, the Ikkarim* and other texts explain. They had a vision of Hashem and therefore said 'we will do and we will understand' with sincerity, with their whole heart.
Then prophecy departed and it was impossible to demand of them that they keep the commitment made while they were prophets.
You should also consult Torah Or* on Megillat Esther*.
Please convey my regards to the members of your family. Wishing you all the good,

(1) Dr. Asher Hillman. See letter no. 244.
(2) See letters nos. 317 and 350.
(3) To designate the washing of hands preceding the eating of Matzah*. This word therefore rhymes with Motzi Matzah.
(4) Birkat HaMazon* and the acceptance of the Seder. The various Seder steps, presented in this way, rhyme: One recites Kiddush*, washes hands, eats a vegetable, breaks the Matzah, reads the Haggadah, washes hands, eats Matzah, bitter herbs*, then both together, eats the Afikoman*, recites Birkat HaMazon, reads Hallel* and the Seder is accepted.
(5) At the Sinai* revelation. The Torah was then given under compulsion and the children of Israel did not therefore receive it 'with love.'
(6) This refers therefore to Hashem's love for Israel.
